@garyseconomics I have a question. I’m really interested in what you say but why does it cost more to build a new building than old buildings are selling for?

@FergusElias @DefraGovUK The terroir of england gasses are exceptional and should quite rightly be stipulated. The customer needs to know.

the latest missive from @DefraGovUK on wine regulations in the UK. Is this a joke? " Allow bulk imported wine to be carbonated or processed in the Charmat method or sweetened in the UK. The first two changes would be labelled as ‘Sparkling wine of X, carbonated in England’. "

@FelicityCarter This position only exists because people said alcohol is good for you - it isn’t good for you, some may not be bad but lots of definitely not good.

@SussexWineProd @DermotSugrue This is because of companies forward paying duty. The amount paid per unit of alcohol quite rightly should be equalised.

The largest increase in excise duty on wine in c.50 years, last August, has lead to a £436m reduction in duty paid September - January year on year! and an 9% increase in average wine prices. #CutDrinksDuty and keep the excise duty system, simple with a single duty level on wine.
WSTA@wstauk

If the current easement ends, a single duty on wines (11.5-14% abv) will balloon into 30 possible payable amounts. Let’s keep it simple: Taxing wine by strength might seem straightforward, but it is not. @hmtreasury, #CutDrinksDuty - clarity benefits everyone. #WSTA #Duty

@timatkin @hernehillandy @unsplash We have always happily paid to enter wine competitions. If the wine is good we get some great comments and some good publicity that is meaningful to consumers. The price and process is very clear to all.

What's the point of wine criticism? And how should critics earn a living in the new media environment? Is it OK to write tasting notes for money? In his latest column for my site, ⁦@hernehillandy⁩ has some answers. Link in bio. Photo by F Santander on ⁦@unsplash

Had lunch @TheWolseley yesterday & ordered a bottle of Chablis at £68. I was a bit surprised when a bottle of Petit-Chablis turned up. I didn’t make a fuss as I had guests, but it was pretty ordinary stuff, a touch too thin and underwhelming. Waiter didn’t know the difference.

Oh dear. Buried in the @Wine_GB data just released are estimates of sales data 2019 - 5.5 M 2020 - 7.1 M 2021 - 9.3 M 2022 - wait for it.... 8.0 M Disappointing, given hot tips from UK vineyards that 2023 may be a bumper year with upwards of 15 M bottles made. Get the corkscrew!

@spskelton The soil functions far better in the long run if things are growing in it. The vines are just not enough to support the soils ecosystem on their own

No! If weeds are growing they are using water & competing with the vines. As Gregory says “under the vine weed management is a huge issue”. Even in the UK, under vine weeds and cover crops have a negative effect on the vines. See NIAB-EMR research trials in their vineyards.
DeBarraVineyards@NTippVineyard

@spskelton Are they not more likely to prevent the sun from baking the ground and help retain some moisture in the ground.

@DavidMarra @FergusElias @jamiegoode With Pinot what are you extracting over time? Only alcohol soluble things that you don’t want. You know that point not enough colour but too much extraction?

@FergusElias @camelwinemaker @jamiegoode Also, is this possibly a bit risky in that you’re 100% committed to a particular level of extraction right up front and possibly limited in your ability to change tack depending on how things are going?

A grape “blender” allegedly this removes the requirement for skin contact when making red wine…wazz the grapes stick em in the press hey presto red juice. Then ferment as you would a white.
