I saw Sam Lindo @camelwinemaker last night, and he said that they had bud burst on Chardonnay and Rondo in Cornwall. Looking back at my records, this is as early as 2017 and we all know what happened in that frosty year! Fingers crossed for the next few weeks.

@SussexWineProd @DermotSugrue This is because of companies forward paying duty. The amount paid per unit of alcohol quite rightly should be equalised.

The largest increase in excise duty on wine in c.50 years, last August, has lead to a £436m reduction in duty paid September - January year on year! and an 9% increase in average wine prices. #CutDrinksDuty and keep the excise duty system, simple with a single duty level on wine.

And you should add ... 3 wines entered, 3 medals won! Not everyone can say that. We all know how good you rosé is, and it's as consistent as night follows day, but what really impressed me this year was your 2015 Special reserve. What a beautiful wine!

Had lunch @TheWolseley yesterday & ordered a bottle of Chablis at £68. I was a bit surprised when a bottle of Petit-Chablis turned up. I didn’t make a fuss as I had guests, but it was pretty ordinary stuff, a touch too thin and underwhelming. Waiter didn’t know the difference.

Oh dear. Buried in the @Wine_GB data just released are estimates of sales data 2019 - 5.5 M 2020 - 7.1 M 2021 - 9.3 M 2022 - wait for it.... 8.0 M Disappointing, given hot tips from UK vineyards that 2023 may be a bumper year with upwards of 15 M bottles made. Get the corkscrew!

@spskelton The soil functions far better in the long run if things are growing in it. The vines are just not enough to support the soils ecosystem on their own

No! If weeds are growing they are using water & competing with the vines. As Gregory says “under the vine weed management is a huge issue”. Even in the UK, under vine weeds and cover crops have a negative effect on the vines. See NIAB-EMR research trials in their vineyards.

@DavidMarra @FergusElias @jamiegoode With Pinot what are you extracting over time? Only alcohol soluble things that you don’t want. You know that point not enough colour but too much extraction?

@FergusElias @camelwinemaker @jamiegoode Also, is this possibly a bit risky in that you’re 100% committed to a particular level of extraction right up front and possibly limited in your ability to change tack depending on how things are going?

A grape “blender” allegedly this removes the requirement for skin contact when making red wine…wazz the grapes stick em in the press hey presto red juice. Then ferment as you would a white.
