Four protectors attached to the Mkhambathini Local Municipality have been arrested this week. KZN police, through its Crime Intelligence structures, discovered the men were using firearms not registered to the municipality to carry out their duties. This included providing close protection to the mayor and other senior officials. Investigations have revealed the five guns in their possession belong to the Calvin and Family Group security company. It appears that a contract of some sort exists between the company and the municipality - but instead of providing manpower, only guns have been supplied. According to the SAPS, it amounts to a serious contravention of the Firearms Control Act. The municipality says it enlisted the services of the private security company in January 2025, at a cost of R34 000 per guard - a decision influenced by security concerns. However, the municipality pays the guards a salary directly each month. Two weeks ago, a team from the SAPS national office conducted a scheduled firearms compliance check at the Calvin and Family Group head office in Durban North. That process - which requires the officers to verify the existence and location of the company’s 857 firearms in various areas across the country - is still ongoing. The Private Security Industry Regulatory Authority is also looking into the Mkhambathini incident, but would not comment further. In light of the latest developments, the Mkhambathini Local Municipality has told @eNCA it will review the security contract and look at possible alternatives.

A elderly doctor based in Katlehong, Ekurhuleni. was hijacked and kidnapped in the Alrode area, near Cliffs earlier today. Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) members who were in the vicinity witnessed the incident and pursued the suspects. During the pursuit, the suspects opened fire on the EMPD vehicle, causing significant damage. EMPD officers escaped without injuries. Police and private security responded. The victim’s vehicle was recovered at Mandela Section, in Katlehong. The victim was found in the Mandela section. The suspects robbed the victim of a cellphone, cash and bank cards.

EXCLUSIVE Several senior police officers, including Generals, have been arrested in Pretoria on corruption related charges. It is linked to the Medicare Tshwane District contract. [HIJACKING AND KIDNAPPING] Police foiled a kidnapping plot in Katlehong, resulting in the rescue of two victims and the arrest of four suspects, including a popular Vaal DJ Spitjo from Sebokeng. Preliminary report suggests that, information was received from a night-shift security officer at Eastgate Mall regarding suspicious activities involving individuals impersonating another person using her mobile phone. Acting on this intelligence, police initiated a coordinated, intelligence-driven operation which led to the arrest of three suspects at Eastgate Mall. Subsequent investigations directed the police to a safe house in Dikole Section, Katlehong. Upon arrival, an exchange of gunfire ensued. One additional suspect was apprehended at the scene, and two unlicensed firearms with live ammunition were recovered. Two victims, a male and a female, were found at the ‘safe house’ and rescued without injuries. The female victim had earlier been hijacked while driving a navy blue BMW X3 and was subsequently forced to transfer an estimated amount of R180,000 from her bank accounts.
