@aki_i_lv @aegifogur some words in adults novels have it but usually it's a funny reading like 煙管 or it's non jouyou (funnily sometimes even common non-jouyou stuff like 躊躇う occasionally has it) it can be pretty random like i've seen the reading for 沈鬱 be given for seemingly no reason

@aegifogur Well…they only do it when it’s kids media If you read an adult novel, for example, it wouldn’t have it lmfao Nothing to do with the amount of kanji, just kids learning to read

i often think about the fact that there’s so many kanjis that they have to put the hiragana above it for children/people who don’t know how to read it yet, such an interesting linguistically phenomenon

Until very recently I thought "saving face" was an American original concept, and once or twice I even tried to explain the concept to Japanese people. No wonder they thought I was weird
Joe Weisenthal@TheStalwart

Good time to remind followers not based in the US that in American culture there is a high premium placed on basically “saving face” which may be something useful to think about if you’re trying to figure out how this ends.

Maybe I'm just ignorant, but despite looking, I've still never found a true example of a word/idea that cannot be translated into English. The English version may take multiple words, or even a sentence. It may lose its poetry. But it can be translated all the same.

@Lobsteri_no @_Soldy @himaningen45 i dont have anything against the oliver guy but it's frustrating to see so many people in the replies that promote a culture of mediocrity where the response to not knowing something is "it's fine if I don't know this" rather than "nice here is something new to learn"

@airkatakana is this because skilled people don't want to migrate to korea or because the koreans reject all the applicants?

interestingly, even the korean people seem to have not realized how absolutely horrible the korean government is at predicting things never seen them even get the right order of magnitude 3 top tier immigrants when expecting 1000, 30k concertgoers when expecting 300k, etc

The supermarkets near BTS concert expected around 300,000 people, so they increased their stock x10 but the actual crowd was much lower which caused them significant losses

@Corsenator @rpdf02 @Jon981322943 @PeterMallouk oops ur right my mistake i misread it as "nobody wants to live in these cities" (california) instead of "nobody wants to live in these cities" (the cities from the screenshot)

@rpdf02 @Jon981322943 @PeterMallouk california being the most expensive place to live in the world implies people want to live there. if no one wanted to live in california, no one would pay 2 million for a shack in the bay

@deadangle111 @Jon981322943 @PeterMallouk Partially correct, but the real reason is nobody wants to live in these cities. Demand for living in CA will always exceed supply.

@illysi_ Stanford is 100% full ride if your parents make less than 150k a year, and even if they make more than that there is still generous need based aid. The only people paying sticker price at stanford are people with very rich parents.

I was at a corporate meeting and our CEO was weaving a story to drive his point and said “Say I’m a parent and I want to send my kid to Stanford. That’s $50,000 a year out of my pocket”

Oliver Jia (オリバー・ジア)
This is exactly the kind of pretentious elitist bullshit with Japanese I’m talking about. No one acts this way in other language learning communities, but these people insist on making Japanese their entire personality. I have no tolerance for this stupidity.

Oliver Jia (オリバー・ジア)@OliverJia1014

People who’ve studied languages like Russian, Italian, French, etc. Are those learning communities as abrasive and needlessly hostile as the people studying Japanese? I suspect soft power/weeb media is a big reason for why Japanese attracts a certain kind of person sometimes.
