Since the 1990s, students at Grinnell College have used an entirely text-based social network that’s virtually unknown to outsiders. Page of the day: GrinnellPlans encycla.com/GrinnellPlans

Stay cool on the command line 🕶. You can now start a new Encycla page without even visiting the website first. Just do a `git clone` of a new page name 📝 Details @Encycla/Encycla_Git_Documentation" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">encycla.com/@Encycla/Encyc… & thanks to @kseistrup for the great suggestion 👏

Sometimes you know *just* the person to start a page. Now you can invite someone to create a page. Just click "Invite" when viewing a page that doesn't exist and send them the link! 🎉📝

@kseistrup @philipn The git clone idea is cool. So idea is you could just use the git workflow entirely, no utilities needed. Think repo would need some dummy initial commit to be cloned “blank” like this. Will add to list to explore!

@kseistrup @philipn Interesting idea. Use case you’re thinking is creating a page locally more easily before creating in web UI? Would a small utility to init dummy repo work? Or would you want it created on Encycla first, so entire workflow can happen without any web UI?

@SHaedrich @jannikmeissner If you're still looking & are doing public collaboration, please check us out! ✨ We use git on the backend (& you can clone/push elsewhere/edit locally) but our web UI has nothing to do with git - it's designed to be intuitive for non-git-types. encycla.com

@jannikmeissner If I get you right, you are looking for a wiki implementation where base functionality is replaced with git functionality if there's an overlap, so you can work with the wiki more or less like you'd work with gitted projects?

Is there a Wiki Software that creates pages from markdown files in a git repo? I'd like people to be able to create merge requests on the content, but not post without a maintainer approving it.

@Astrophizz @Taberone @overfireisland ✨ Please check us out too! We use git on the backend (so you can `git clone/push/pull` your pages to other services/your computer). Our web UI is designed to be super usable for anyone. encycla.com

@vrijomslachtig I like having git based revision system and if you ever colab it works well for that too. I write in grammarly then export to markdown (could star in Word or google docs too. And finally, If you really had to you can transfer to a self hosted git server.

I really wish #MSWord or some tool supported markdown, with comments, backed by a git repo - sort of like make it simple for non tech user, but let devs work in markdown.

Any online editor that has the suggesting mode of Google Docs (people correct the text in suggesting mode & the author needs to approve the changes or not) and markdown support? I'm thinking git with PR, but wouldn't mind something more "easy" than having to do PR all the time!

@hypescam @NireBryce Check Encycla out, too. encycla.com It's not free-form HTML/CSS/etc so you can't make a regular website, but it's portable (cloneable git repositories containing markdown under the hood, web UI all rich text w/ no git knowledge needed).

@NireBryce honestly a GitHub pages thing that's not on GitHub and has a file-browser like interface to git, building static pages from markdown is sorta the best I've been able to think of. but after templates, taking fuller control still requires at least css, so idk.

@deane_barker Facing the same question. First supplementary question is how & in what do you want to write? Markdown in a text editor? In a wysiwyg editor? GitBook and similar are where I'm leaning.
