I think the hardest thing for me the last few years has been seeing so many talented scientists who obviously belong in the academy turn into tech company middle managers or startup founders.

@zeeg That said, you all + Honeycomb + new Lightstep + New Relic (at least in one iteration) all seem to be pricing similarly (although with somewhat different axes), so completely willing to believe that I'm missing a big cost driver.

@zeeg I mean - is it really, though? We were doing tail sampling on Lightstep Classic (RIP) but then rage moved to Tempo - the DX sucks but GCS + Parquet machine goes brrrrr

That blog post these days is somewhat outdated as our thinking has evolved as we've gathered more customer insights, but the gist is still there: Sampling is required at any reasonable scale, and even small projects often hit scale concerns these days.

Don't know what this is about, but it's highly suspicious. Dozens of bot accounts with similar cartoon pics & names like "@VirginiaB72124" have followed me and the Oaklandside in recent weeks. They're all brand new and all follow roughly the same 2 dozen Bay Area news accounts.

@isosteph I think he screwed it up - the way it's "supposed" to work is you ask somebody for their name and when they say their first name, you say "oh of course, {Soandso} I meant your last name" so you like get the name and a neg in too? I dunno

One of the interesting things about TV shows when portraying good guys with lots of money is how often they downplay the numbers. eg a good guy's law firm taking a $250k retainer and portraying it as massive
