The Solvay Conferences, first held in 1911, were pivotal in the development of quantum mechanics. They were a series of conferences that brought together the most prominent physicists of the time, leading to many breakthroughs and collaborations in the field.

Today @landgeist shows us the youngest and oldest areas in Europe. Simple me was surprised to learn about how young parts of Ireland are.

@simongerman600 Unsustainable urban model! For the average American bigger is better. But it's a matter of fact that the welfare models are completely different: while in France there is a powerful Welfare State, in the States wild capitalism dominates. Poor neighborhoods: Paris/Houston ⬇️

@simongerman600 Not only that, most of the media is only available in English - in Scandinavia for example, foreign cinema films or series are usually only played in English audio with subtitles - while things like video games or apps are usually not available in the local language at all.

Map shows the global English Language Proficiency Levels in 2021 for all nations that don’t have English as their First Language. Argentina wins Latin America. The Netherlands wins everything.

@cornbreadereum @simongerman600 Fun fact: in Dutch, we say "Eekhoorn" (originates from German I guess), which you pronounce almost the same as the English word "acorn"... the food that squirrels eat! 🐿️

@simongerman600 @simongerman600 excellent. Would love to see "squirrel" translation across Europe! German " Eichhornchen " = Tree Croissant 🥐

@willmcgugan logging It feels archaic/outdated (for example, I'd wished it supports f-strings for the log formatter) and because of legacy function names like getLogger() and so on, it also doesn't feel zen.

Here's an interesting question. What is your *least* favorite #Python library that you nonetheless use regularly?

@raymondh `snooze()` perhaps then? You are expected to wake up, and that is how your sleep will end, eventually 😉

One possibility is to have aliased it to "until". I'm looking for a word that communicates that the exception is expected and that it is how the loop ends.

#Python 3.4 added the contextlib.suppress() as an elegant way to write the pattern: try: <suite> except SomeException: pass Originally, I called it ignore() rather than suppress(), but it is still not clear what the right name should have been. 1/3

Aliasing "suppress" to "catch" reads nicely in this context (no pun intended), but it still falls short of being exactly the right word. What is "le mot juste"? What would you have called suppess() aka ignore() aka catch()? 3/3

@BeatlesJane @simongerman600 They actually replace "reet" for "kont" sometimes though (related to the English "cunt", which refers to another hole - I wonder where that mix-up comes from 🤔), which is slightly less vulgar imho

@simongerman600 Unfortunately the Dutch one loses its wonderful alliteration in translation. "Het zal me aan m'n reet roesten" reet = ass (vulg.) roesten = to rust/oxidise Funnily enough, people sometimes replace the 'rust' with the more formal 'oxidise', but leave the 'ass' as it is. :P

@Murat_Kendir @klaskarlsson Note that Esri's model builder and FME are already connected. Esri markets it as their Data Interoperability extension.

@klaskarlsson I have more different idea: Could we somehow connect QGIS/ESRI Model Builder, Blender Scripting Tool and FME together. Think about that all of three are handling some parts of a single process, but work together and we can save whole process as a single open-format file.

Open Source is great, but there's something to say about the ease of use when it comes to data processing in a graphical user interface. Could this be done with GDAL/OGR commands? Yes! But damn, this looks nice and clear. #FME #linux #expensive_software

This is so cool! I can't wait to use a MIDI controller in my own visualisations. The motorised faders are just perfect, especially as they move when settings are changed outside of the controller.

Don’t Look Up, premiering today, is an instant classic! A powerful and HILARIOUS allegory about the climate crisis and how we react to increasingly dire warnings. Don’t miss it!
