“Unrealized gains” is a fake term made up by rich people to justify not paying taxes. Its the financial equivalent of a schoolchild saying “IM NOT TOUCHING YOU!” Sorry, but assets are wealth. Might as well say money isn’t wealth since you havent traded it for goods and services
The Refined Populist@RefinedPopulist

If your 1970’s home is now worth $1M, you’re on the hook for ~$10K/yr. Based entirely on unrealized gains. That’s absurd for the fixed-income elderly. Property taxes SHOULD be abolished for Boomers. But they should be abolished for everyone else too. Property taxes are evil.

I just introduced the Anti-Insurrectionist Act in NY. It's simple: If you're a New Yorker who takes from Trump's illegal January 6th slush fund, NY will tax 100% of it.

Most people don't realize but Americans only pay Social Security taxes on income under $184,500. What that means is anyone that makes over that stops paying Social Security at $184,501. If the Social Security earnings cap were removed they would have enough money for universal health care.

@shahjahan_ch @PalmerLuckey @AOC You come from a culture where filthy is savour and shit is fragrance. I don't mean to insult you just to point out that sharing is not the white man's way. Btw, no productivity gain would be possible in the absence of capital. If capital is yours, then you reap the benefits

Your argument is cheeky. The core question isn't if billionaires cheat, but that how are "productivity gains" distributed. Are they accumulated by capital? Are they shared with workers? The only way to measure: is the average well-being of the people in an economy improving over time as productivity/technology/gdp grows? Are they feeling squeezed? Are basic necessities being met better? It's a fact that the American worker is being left behind since the Reagan years while the asset owners (stocks, bonds, real estate) have been winning. Why is that? It's not because of billionaires being inventive. It's because the system has been skewed to favor capital. And that has to be addressed to continue building wealth and well-being for humanity - otherwise, unrest and civil war will happen. But that's not something you want to discuss. You just want to make the point: billionaire good.

The single largest form of theft in America is wage theft. $50 billion a year are stolen from American workers. If a billionaire amasses their wealth by underpaying their full-time workers so severely that they must rely on food assistance and government programs to survive, then no, that wealth was not earned by one individual - it was a wealth transfer subsidized by underpaid American workers and the public who get stuck with the bill for large corporations free-riding off our systems. The point is less about individual morality. It’s more about how our current economic reality of shattering inequality rewards screwing over workers and exploiting essential systems at scale. We’re talking monopoly power. Rent-seeking. Wage theft. Profiteering. Stock buybacks. Destabilizing housing markets. Companies using SNAP/EBT to underwrite their wages. Massive government subsidies or contracts to corporations following lobbying and dark money in politics with little to no oversight or accountability. Some people get enraged that I draw attention to this. That’s on them. Let them call me shrill, dumb, inexperienced, girly, uneducated - these folks will say anything to distract from or undercut the truth that working people are getting screwed, and giving people a fair shake means we must have a grown conversation about reigning in abuse of power.
Marco Foster@MarcoFoster_

AOC: “There’s a certain level of wealth and accumulation that is unearned. You can’t earn a billion dollars. You just can’t earn that. You can get market power, you can break rules, you can abuse labor laws, you can pay people less than what they’re worth, but you can’t earn that”

Murray: Is it true that people making under $184,000 pay a 12.4% Social Security tax rate? Dahl: Yes Murray: And the rate for someone making $1,000,000? Dahl: 2.2% Murray: So, a 12.4% tax for people making less than $184,000, but 2.2% for a millionaire or .0002% for billionaires.
