@jasonlk We're profitable, bootstrapped, and "underinvested," yet 10 years later, we still have many customers migrating to us weekly from VC startups.

There’s a lot of discussion about bootstrapping vs. raising VC but there’s one issue that is underdiscussed: What To Do With The Cash What do I mean? At first, for sure, bootstrapping arguably is harder. There’s no seed round, no big Series A, to fund things. Cash is even tighter. Everything takes longer. It’s harder, at least in some ways. But the thing is, to bootstrap, you have to be profitable. Or at least break-even. By definition. So you tend to get pretty good at it. Years go by, you grow to $5m, $10m, $20m ARR, and many times, the profits grow too. You might drop 20%-30% to the bottom line as you scale. And what do you do with those $2m, $4m, $20m of profits? It’s complicated: 💰First, you can just distribute them to yourself and the team. That’s great … and it’s something you can’t do as venture-backed. You can’t really pay yourself $2m of the profits as a VC-backed CEO. But it also means you aren’t investing as much or at all in growth. It’s too easy to underinvest here and distribute all the profits, or most of them. 🏦 Second, you can try to save it for a war chest. That’s great but you will have to pay taxes — a lot of them. This often comes as a shock to founders that haven’t seen this before. Why do I have to pay taxes if I’m saving the money to grow my business? But you do. ⚖️ You can try to load balance and do both. Take some profits out, invest the rest. This is what most do. The problem here is your venture-backed competitors are investing all of it, not just some. You’re almost by definition against under-investing. Being profitable is liberating and a wonderful place to be. But profitable AND bootstrapped has an interesting set of nuances. Do you invest in the future? Or take the profits now? It’s an extra choice the venture-backed generally don’t have (secondary stock sales aside).
