The angels described in the Bible look almost nothing like the angels in our paintings...
According to the celestial hierarchy discussed by Thomas Aquinas in his Summa Theologica, the three highest orders of angels stand closest to God. Each one is described in the Bible in a way that has almost nothing to do with how we picture them today.
The Thrones, the third-highest order, appear in the visions of the prophet Ezekiel. He describes them as wheels of fire intersecting one another, "a wheel within a wheel," with rims "full of eyes all around." In the Hebrew tradition they are called Ophanim, meaning wheels.
Their function is to carry and uphold the throne of God.
The Cherubim, the second-highest order, also appear in Ezekiel's visions and in the book of Genesis, where they guard the gates of Eden with a "flaming sword which turned every way."
In Renaissance painting, they were transformed into pink-cheeked winged babies, but the Bible describes something entirely different...
Each Cherub has four wings and four faces: a man, a lion, an ox, and an eagle. It was a Cherub that Christian tradition identifies as the highest fallen angel. In his Summa Theologica, Aquinas argued that Satan, before his fall, was a Cherub, drawing on Ezekiel 28, which describes a "guardian cherub" in Eden who fell through pride.
The Seraphim, the highest order, appear in the vision of Isaiah. "Above him stood the seraphim," the prophet writes. "Each had six wings: with two he covered his face, with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew."
The face and feet are covered out of humility before God. The remaining two wings are for flight. The Hebrew word Seraphim literally means the burning ones.
Centuries later, similar beings appear in the New Testament book of Revelation. There, John of Patmos describes four creatures around the throne of God, but now their wings are "full of eyes within."
The angels of our paintings have soft faces and feathered wings. The angels of the Bible have wheels for bodies, four faces, and wings full of eyes...

Is love a leadership style? I know that it matters when leaders connect with and acknowledge their teams. When I think about the greatest leaders I’ve known, each of them loved their team, loved their people, and went beyond their job description to help them. Love isn’t an emotion; it’s a choice that becomes emotional. It’s putting other’s welfare and success before your own.
My only playing time as a rookie was third down pass rushing and special teams. On the roster I was listed as Barney Chavous’s backup at defensive end. Barney was an amazing player to learn behind. He never made mental mistakes and rarely got beat physically. He also never got hurt. When you were Barney’s back up you didn’t play. The average career in the NFL is just over 3 years. Barney played 13 seasons for the Broncos, took a year off, and then coached for 11 more seasons with the Broncos.
The story goes that Broncos owner Pat Bowlen and Coach Reeves understood how much Barney was missed in the locker room and wanted him back. They could replace him on the field, but they needed him in the locker room. Barney made it a priority to connect with the young, and unproven players. He was the keeper of the culture in Bronco-land. His leadership off the field was deeply missed. Dan knew Chavous loved to bird hunt, so he invited him pheasant hunting. Of course, Barney was available for hunting, so on the drive back from the hunt Dan talked Barney into becoming a coaching intern. Barney bounced around from assistant weight coach, assistant defensive line coach, and even assistant offensive line coach, but his real job was to connect with the players.
When Barney Chavous was inducted into the Colorado Sports Hall of Fame, in his acceptance speech, he pointed out that his leadership style was love. As a follower of Jesus, the most effective and loving leader in history, Barney knew what he was doing. I have no question that love is a leadership style, and neither does anyone who was Barney’s teammate. He was an irreplaceable influence and mentor for hundreds of young Broncos. He led with love.

Heaven ushered in a hero of the faith last night as my Dad was welcomed home!
Many will say sorry for your loss but the truth is he’s not lost, we know exactly where he is.
He’s home.
Forever!
I asked him last week what he looked forward to most about Heaven, and he simply said, “Jesus.”
He couldn’t wait to see Jesus face to face.
Praise God that his wait is over.
Death has been swallowed up in victory.
He’s healed and whole now.
So we don’t mourn as those with no hope.
See you soon Dad!
