BREAKING: @SaveAustinNow launches a charter amendment petition to require an EXTERNAL affordability and efficiency audit of the entire city budget. If we collect 25k valid, signed petitions by Feb. 1, it will be on the May 4, 2026 ballot. This is based on the audit that Houston just conducted, which helped them avoid a tax rate election (unlike Austin). Importantly, as a Charter Amendment, it will REQUIRE that complete external audits be conducted ATLEAST every 5 years or AT LEAST be completed one year BEFORE any future tax rate election.
