We had a project in 2025 that literally went from 8k to 18k clicks per month in 3 months SIMPLY from unpublishing the new canalizing pages ... Cannibalization is about two pages targeting the same phrase and blocking each other for the same phrase or a combination of very similar phrases. The outcome is that nothing from that domain ranks. Its incredibly easy to identify - you had a page ranking - introduced a new page and start to rotate and you lose the position. Easiest repair is to unpublish or noindex the new page. Identifying pages over 12 months gets hard - GSC isn't great for that natively but its relatively easy.

@MalteLandwehr agree on the links/signals part. but that's not technically cannibalization. that's UX. Hate the term crawl budget. not a thing anybody whose pages aren't' measured in the 10s of millions has to worry about.

keyword cannibalization in SEO is a myth. having a 2nd page optimized for the same keywords cannot hurt your first page. that's just not how a search engine works at all. The concept exists nowhere in the yandex source code, google API leak, or any information retrieval textbook I've ever read.
