It's funny, I remember Americans being kind of scared of Japan in the late 80s and early 90s. I even read Michael Crichton's Rising Sun, which made the Japanese sound like this advanced, unstoppable alien race who were going to take over our country. And they were buying up a lot of America, and the fear of them was similar to the fear of China now. But I think Japan then had a recession, and all the fears abated. Still, though, we continued to think of Japan as the one nation out there more technologically advanced than us -- but more of admiration now than fear.
