If you are serious about better mathematics education - be it in a traditional classroom or supported by tech, then ignoring the QAMA really means you are just happy with mediocrity. Sorry. Take a look and if you think they are not worth the time or effort - PLEASE say why. This is one of those times when silence means complicity with the poor substitute for thought that calculators have generally become.

Desirable Difficulties - as discussed by UCLA - Hear from the Bjorks on @mrbartonmaths podcast at 1:06 how the QAMA contributes to thinking. podcast.mrbartonmaths.com/robert-and-eli… The result of their thinking? See more recommendations at qama.world

Ok. A serious question all you who teach or use mathematics in the classroom. Why would you NOT use a QAMA calculator? Let’s just say for when demonstrating and needing to show a calculation where you use a normal on screen Calc. I am truly interested. What am I missing?

April 17th is International Haiku Day! So, here's something for your mathematics/English classes! 1 ) Class discusses Haikus 2) Decide on your theme for the class. (Check out the tips to make this more effective) 3) Everyone enters their Haiku into Poemblender (link below) 4) Click the 'blend button' to see a new Haiku every time 5) Q: How many possible Haikus in YOUR class? 6) Q: if the whole school does this, how many haikus? How likely is it that the haiku you read will EVER be chosen again by random? 7) Print them out, share with Parents. Any other ideas?

Screw it. I wanna give back. I'm giving away my FULL system for self-publishing books on Amazon that's made me over $1,000,000. (Including how to use AI to do the majority of the work) All packed into an in-depth Guide. • Like this • Comment "KDP" & I'll DM you the full thing. *Must Follow*

Sarah Hart mentions Raymond Queneau, which is where I got the idea from a few years back (On the shoulders of giants and so on...). I chose not to add sonnets for reasons of memory! But if asked... magazine.1000libraries.com/the-man-who-wr…

I was just looking to do an article on calculators and the introduction/use of AI - but what a mess of AI manipulated images of that 1980s teachers photo exist! Check this one out... Yep, of course a mathematics teacher would write that on a banner. And that sort of rests my case! In the meantime, Here's an article with a related subject from 2018, when I didn't even know what an em-dash was! @timstirrup/the-worlds-first-a-i-enabled-calculator-ae28fddc7c19" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">medium.com/@timstirrup/th…

Years ago, I was thinking about a potential Education consultancy business. As part of the deal. I was a substitute/supply teacher for a day (or as appropriate). Two reasons - to show that I could ‘walk the walk’ and also to help inform the consultancy. Circumstances changed and it never came to fruition.

Instead of bringing in guest speakers to talk about teaching and inspire us with anecdotes, why not have them actually teach? Put them in a real classroom and let’s watch the magic happen. Let us see how they plan, how they adjust in the moment, how they respond to student questions, manage behavior, and assess understanding. Now that’s the kind of professional development that would actually inspire me.

Too much mathematics gone through too fast. Doesn’t sound like a recipe for success. Slow it down. Take time to reflect. To talk. To discuss. To ask “what if…?” - In an algorithmic, scripted, here’s the process world, where’s the time for that? And if lessons are a series of times online lectures followed by a load of MCQ, even artfully retrieved a week, month later, where’s the Socratic nature of education gone? Where’s the opportunity to question- not the teacher questioning, but the learner. Does online learning in its very nature always assume that ‘this’ is the right way to learn something and no other approach is possible! Learning mathematics is a marathon, not a sprint. I’m still learning today! So, if today is ‘slow it down Sunday’, how does that affect what we do. Obviously this is something I feel strongly about and rather than just write, I actively create my own and support other’s tools that encourage thought, questioning and time. Take time… slow it down…
