[ CONTENT WARNING ] Photos circulating online show the brutality of the German colonial rule in Namibia. The photos show the back of a Namibian labourer covered in raised scars from years of getting whipped by the German settler Ludwig Cramer. The photographs, taken in 1912 by missionary Johann Jakob Irle, was used as evidence in the colonial trial that convicted Cramer of serious bodily injury against ten African workers. It resurfaces as Namibia enters the final stage of reparations negotiations with Germany over the 1904–1908 Herero and Nama genocide, talks in which Berlin has formally rejected the legal term "reparations."
