Gürkan has received a life sentence, while Ismail has received 13 years. The court erupted in cheers when the verdict was announced, while several women cried. The judge determined the brothers were speeding through the streets of Ludwigsburg at 150 km/h (93 mph). Gürkan U. struck and killed two women, 22-year-old Selin K. and 23-year-old Merve K. Gürkan U. is a career criminal with 14 convictions. Already during his school years, he was arrested for punching, choking, and sexually abusing his classmates. In addition, he had multiple traffic and violent offenses on his record, including rape, theft, fraud, driving without a license, hit-and-run, and violating insurance laws. He also tried to sell €65,000 worth of cocaine to an undercover officer. Gürkan lost his driver's license in 2015, but two years later he got it back and was back on the road. His brother, Ismail U., was convicted of attempted murder and had previously been arrested for drunk driving in 2018. He sped away from police with a blood alcohol level of 1.4 per mille, ran a red light, smashed into multiple vehicles, and drove through a police checkpoint, nearly hitting an officer.
