BIG news - I'm going to be living in Xinjiang from next month. Why? Submitting draft of PhD thesis soon which lets me use AI to detect cancer, better than doctors can. 🎉 BUT It will take months to process and graduate, and it's difficult to find graduate job i want without PhD. So......... I'm moving to Xinjiang. Yep, will be living and working there for a few months as a Mathematics teacher. Get some experience whilst i wait around and then possibly come back for a postdoc in Shanghai after a year.

Eid Mubarak! We have a 3 day public holiday here in Xinjiang, which makes other parts of China jealous of here. The perks of being in an autonomous region !

@96Stats Dr Luke, to be associated with the local propaganda industry is a terrible idea for your career. This guy Jerry Goode was also on billboards and Xinjiang trips, now he runs a conspiracies account, nobody will touch him. There are many more cases. Try to avoid.

The US wants the best model. China wants AI to quietly do everyday jobs everywhere.. big difference! Big news in Beijing today, a new AI day care centre for children and seniors just opened which can have 300 guests a day, where 40+ robots from 24 companies all come together to make dinner and drinks for you, play chess, football and drawing activities with children, massages, moxibustion, medical care, and even giving health counselling telling you which foods to eat and avoid based on blood levels Yet a US AI startup just raised $65 million for sensors because caregivers are still managing shifts with pagers.. great.. but its just about trying to. monetise labour shortage, not actually helping people inside the carehomes giving them better care. Chinese AI totally changing society here very quickly and its in the right way. Very exciting.

@96Stats Yep very cool. Even more impressed yesterday by the pick up zone at Beijing South Railway Station, where you can see exactly which spot your driver is waiting in

big fan of this - Beijing's Daxing airport now has this cool tracking system so you can see exactly where your luggage is and how long is left until it arrives on the baggage carousel reckon @CurtExplores will rate this too

Time to switch from Google Map to Chinese Amap 高德地图. There's regular bus service from Ili to Almaty. You can also walk across the border at Khorgos.

Wow Musk must be fuming, Neuralink still testing ideas yet China JUST beat them to become the first ever country to get a brain chip product cleared for sale/clinical use!! Something actually ready to use that will now go straight into hospitals here in China to let people with quadriplegia from serious spinal injuries who cannot use their hands to now let them control a robotic glove. Amazing news!

@96Stats Good analysis. BBC continues to do what it always does best - lying about other countries.

@96Stats I’m not sure the translation is accurate though? It says “no one can interfere with others learning and using the country’s official common language”?

And then of course there is the hypocrisy which the BBC would never write about! GOV.UK (british government website) says people applying for citizenship or settlement may need to prove language ability. Home Office naturalisation guidance says applicants must show sufficient knowledge of English, Welsh or Scottish Gaelic, and states that being able to communicate in those languages is an important part of playing a part in community life. Just this month the Home Office announced a higher English standard to live here, saying that English fluency helps migrants “contribute and integrate into British life,” with the Home Secretary calling fluency “the single easiest path to integration.” So when Beijing says a common language helps jobs and life, it's evil, yet London does the exact same, and its to help everyone. Hope you enjoyed the thread :) BBC is fairly ok for national news but terrible for World News as its not regulated by OFCOM so it never gets fact checked.

Dodgy references by BBC too. They take comments from @Magnus_Fiskesjo comments (a professor of anthropology btw) as coming from a “university report” from Cornell, making it seem its formal and peer-reviewed. Check this guys tweets, he hates China! Not an expert on law or uyghur culture at all either. These are their sources? He weirdly said that Chinese cannot leave China and travel..
