BIG news - I'm going to be living in Xinjiang from next month. Why? Submitting draft of PhD thesis soon which lets me use AI to detect cancer, better than doctors can. 🎉 BUT It will take months to process and graduate, and it's difficult to find graduate job i want without PhD. So......... I'm moving to Xinjiang. Yep, will be living and working there for a few months as a Mathematics teacher. Get some experience whilst i wait around and then possibly come back for a postdoc in Shanghai after a year.

🏆 X WORLD CUP: CHINA TAKES Two years ago @RnaudBertrand won the most 'trustworthy' account when it comes to China posts. It's that time again! I'll include pro and anti China accounts (with 10k+ followers) to make it completely fair. You just need to vote for “Who gives the most useful and accurate China takes in 2026?" We will do group stages first - one group each day. The two winners progress in each group where we will do a knockout format. (This might flop, but thought it would be just a bit of fun, if you're included don't take offence, and i encourage you to quote tweet it saying why you think you're better than the other accounts!)

Congratulations to @RnaudBertrand on winning the #ChinaXWorldCup🏆 Officially the best X account when it comes to China content, he is the most factual and trustworthy account, according to you guys who voted! Very well deserved, Arnaud.

The biggest English Corner in Xinjiang (also free)! Did the same when i first moved to Shanghai too - it’s the best way to meet new people when you move to a new city (or country!) as nobody knows each other and wants to make new friends Especially here when there’s not many foreigners so the turnouts always big!

@96Stats TEDxBeijing used to organize lots of activities and parties. Is there anything similar in Xinjiang? I have been in Xinjiang since 5/12, just arrived at Zhaosu.

@96Stats I'd love to visit Urumqi on my next China visit, I just wish it wasn't so far from Guangzhou 😭 considering how scenic the train trip could be though, I'm still contemplating it. Would love to meet an English corner there as the ones I tried in GZ were so fun!

A paralysed art teacher in China just used an AI brain-computer interface to draw again for his son’s birthday! The chip is fully implanted, wireless, and controls a hand exoskeleton. This is the China tech story that should be everywhere, very nice👏👏

China just released Jiuzhang-4, a BIGGG breakthrough in quantum computing ...even the world’s fastest classical supercomputers would need more than one duodecillion (10^42) years to simulate the same task. Beyond human existence!! Insane!

I checked Chinese Weibo and X reactions to Trump’s China trip. The difference is interesting.. On X, people are talking about how Trump has the upper hand and will make good deals for the US. But on Weibo (Chinese version of X), its a little different.. Its all about the guest list. Trump’s family. His close aides. Musk. Cook. Huang. Finance, aviation, agriculture, tech etc etc … So it kinda feels like “America says it wants to decouple from China… but look who got on the plane to Beijing.” X sees how Trump will help, whilst Weibo sees how the US depend on China. Americans see the trip as a chance to control China’s access to chips and markets. Chinese people see the trip as proof that America’s businesses cannot ignore China and China have the upperhand here. The 2 countries keep talking about decoupling, but… CEOs, chips, supply chains, etc keep pulling them back into the same room. Obviously both countries need each other right now and i expect (and hope as i live here) for some genuine good outcomes compared to the last visit.

nice little go on the shared e-bikes in the new part of Urumqi today I live downtown and its quite old with pretty bad roads and transport links, there’s no shared bicycles/ebikes at all.. but this new area is far better developed with more bike lanes and metro stops Will need to explore more of this area as its constantly being developed with millions going into it.. ebike is a good way to do so😁

@96Stats Chingiz Aidarbekov (kyrgyz foreign minister) and Abdrakhmanov (Kazak minister) have both visited Xinjiang pre 2020 and spoken about their citizens or ethnic groups detained. Nursultan Nazarbayev said in 2019 that his work with China meant Kazak cizitens were no longer detained
