In my own personal experience as a frequent moviegoer, I’ve definitely noticed a significant increase after the post-COVID doom period, especially in the last 2-3 years. That’s great news, not just in terms of a healthy film industry, but because audiences seem to be craving again the in-person experience. Maybe we’re entering a new phase where streaming isn’t anymore the all-mighty entity destroying the future of movie theaters, but where exhibition and streaming are re-balancing each other out to reach a new equilibrium 🤞

With all the doomsayer talk of the death of Hollywood, let’s put things into perspective. This has been a great year. My friends in the exhibition business are downright upbeat, something they haven’t been for years. Audiences are going to the movies. They say 2027 and 2028 will be even better. We’ve just seen two indie films from new directors do huge business, thanks to skillful & deft Hollywood distribution. Disclosure Day has done respectable business and like the film or not, it had people talking. And even if you didn’t care for it’s boomer perspective, it’s coming on the heels of Project Hail Mary, which was Hollywood doing what Hollywood does best, with traditional positive storytelling, also with aliens, and a pro humanity, pro morality, visually fantastic character study which explores our relationship with God. We have a new Paramount rising from the brink with the promise of 30 new films a year. There’s new and exciting storytelling tools available to all, heretofore unseen in history, which will certainly advance the medium. The year 2026 has been awesome so far. I can’t wait to see what’s next to come. Hollywood’s absolutely not dead.

Tonight’s movie… Ghost (1990), A Boy, this movie still plays. Superb concept beautifully executed. Two classic movie star performances from Demi Moore and the much-missed Patrick Swayze. Tony Goldwyn is a superb villain. But the real star is Whoopi, who won a no-brainer Oscar by way of an appealing, hilarious and touching performance. Hollywood used to be great.

First of all simply because “the brightest light gets the arrows”. And then of course there’s the matter of demagogy used to steer crowds in an oversimplified worldview of rich = bad, where inevitably the richest man in the world becomes a fundamental pawn, all the more when associated to specific leaders and policies. Musk getting as much heat and hate is basically inevitable in the current climate 🤷🏻‍♂️ Sad thing because, instead, more serious criticism and discussions could be made around AI for instance. And not: OHH TRILLIONAIRE BOOHOO BAAAD BAAAAAD OH NOOO 🙄
