Question for any ranchers in the Flint Hills and other landscapes that use fire to compliment your grazing. Why do you use fire and what are the goals/ objectives / benefits. TIA.

I roll out of bed and go do my night checks in my sweatpants and I gotta tell you it feels so good it makes you question why you don’t give yourself the freedom to do 95% of your daily ranching chores in sweat pants. “Freedom” that’s what ranching in sweatpants feels like.

Exactly ! Nothing lifts people up and motivates them for good like a positive Christian message while nothing pushes them away from church like a negative message. To many sermons I have heard get sidetracked into bashing other Christian denominations or pushing fear and judgment of hand picked sins.

I have been a Christian for 18 years. I have listened to or sat in thousands of sermons Here is my take away: we (the church) needs to preach far more positivity and far less introspective doom and gloom. Monday to Saturday is hard enough for many - let's not make Sunday depressing.

Our 3 kids are 20, 17 & 12. We had our first informal but planned family meeting last night and discussed some great topics about our futures as individuals and as a group. Should have done earlier but excited for their futures and trying to help them down the path they choose.

@Cornobbe Cattle out on the road last 2 days. How is it they wait until Christmas or Sunday morning when you pull out the drive to crawl out every time.

Came home to a magna tile tree just now. What a blessing it is to be 35 with kids, don’t need to be 25 again although it was fun. Wouldn’t trade all the money in the world if it meant fast forwarding into my 40s. This is a sweet spot even with all of its own specific troubles..and I know it’s fleeting.

@CBKimbrell We need to put a rush on it. They just want to “inspect” as a way to steal more proprietary manufacturing knowledge from companies.

The US had better figure out how to onshore rare earth refining or we’re going to end up subject to Chinese rule.

@KINGS1973 Been hearing about that mess all my life. Was born that summer. Dad said when it bottomed he sold that round of calves then doubled down before the bank knew how bad a shape he was in. Might be tougher to do that now

I remember Nixon specifically talking about high meat prices as he put price controls in effect. It coincided my my first job in the meat biz. That did not go well. 50+ years later we are even more in government crosshairs.

Will the Cattle/Corn Spread Repeat the 2010/2014 Cycle? If you are as old as I am, you probably recall the euphoric corn rallies staged between 2010 and 2013. You might also remember the bull market in livestock that followed (high grain prices tend to lead to higher cattle prices eventually). As we know, the cattle market posted parabolic gains throughout much of 2014, but lower corn prices and other factors eventually pulled beef prices sharply lower. At the time, it didn’t dawn on me that the commodity bull market was largely greased by the massive stimulus package employed to mitigate damage from the Global Financial Crisis in 2009. Still, after seeing the same pattern play out following the 2020 stimulus, I have little doubt. Can it be a coincidence that corn prices almost immediately soared higher, in a double-topping fashion, for the three years following historic stimulus in both 2009 and 2020? Similarly, can it be a coincidence that roughly five years after each of these liquidity injections, the cattle market experiences a blow-off top (albeit the jury is still out on today’s cattle market)? We can’t unsee this, nor ignore it. If history repeats itself, the cattle market could be in store for a painful reprice at some point sooner rather than later. In contrast, the corn market will likely remain rangebound with the floor already established near $3.30 per bushel and the ceiling somewhere around $5.00.
