@ebenkampfarms I think that's a huge challenge in modern agriculture: starting kids at a small enough scale that they can learn and have fun growing something

@Cornobbe Entrepreneurship and learning to take care of other living things is why i bought my kids laying hens this spring. They’re doing such a good job at sales that we’re going to have to expand

Eight brood sows aren't going to buy you a car like the stories of my folks getting started 60 years ago. That doesn't mean you shouldn't give your kids a few acres or some livestock or an old building to try to stimulate the ole ag genes. Experimenting is entrepreneurship

@dane_berggren Erasing early/planting sins are worth the money but very difficult to calculate the ROI since you don't know when the forgiving rains will come

I didn't have much experience prior to Flyover of working directly with customers and overseeing a small team. Receiving a review like this shows we're on the right track. I may be TOO involved at times, but I'm really proud of our team and the experience/service we can provide.

@bl_ag_inc I've never worked a bean field except to incorporate manure, and even then I'm not sure it's the right choice. Can get away with a lot more when doing continuous corn.

Driving home today Yesterday was the absolute worst I’ve ever seen soil blowing in my life (I’m not that old but still) 2 different guys pulling high speed discs on chiseled bean stubble 🤦‍♂️ I feel like we can all agree that is a really really bad look

@_TheMizzouTiger @DanBigham Can save a lot not going to a new Hagie or Deere, non exact apply helps. If you're not covering 20k+ acres a year, it takes too long to pay.

@DanBigham Same here. Would love to upgrade from a 4730 but the numbers don’t work. Even though it’s most ROI

@themohawkcliff @TradesByDave Besides that cow numbers are difficult to track, the fun part is supply gets even tighter as the herd rebuilds, and the only real metric to trust as gospel is slaughter.

@TradesByDave I try to understand cycles but when supply is as low as it is with no real evidence that it is increasing, I think we might need a recession or overall consumer crash to retreat to say 2019 levels. Retreat maybe to 2014 high is my bet. I hope is it levels out here. Unlikely!

#LE_F 10-year cattle cycle has proven to be a reliable indicator during the past 60 years. Ideally, the top should have occurred in 2025. 2026 is close enough. #Cattle

@farmer_average @Nebraskero That's fair. I've seen it both ways. Some don't want their kid to waste time and money or get ruined at XYZ State, and my dad said college wasn't optional because his dad pulled him out within a few months of starting. I don't think he had long planned for me to return either tho

@Cornobbe @Nebraskero Agrees with the whole plan before you do it. He might not value you getting experience elsewhere all that much and could interpret it as you not being serious about farming. Often depends on the path dad took...

Go back to the farm or ranch while your dad is still your dad. Most of us should learn, work, and/or start a business outside the operation before investing your whole self back in it, but don't wait too long. Taking the reigns vs having to take the reigns is very different

@LukusMalo42827 It wasn't really college itself. I could say I just needed to make some ag friends. I didn't have many I could relate to in high school, and none of my siblings went back. It hardly seemed like an option. It didn't take me long to realize how big of a part of me it was.

@Cornobbe I went to college and realized I hated it! Made it 1.5 years and straight back to the farm I went. We had a very small operation at the time, I vowed to make it work, 20 years later still trying to figure it out every year! It's been a good life, nothing to complain about!

@LukusMalo42827 I can't argue with that. I needed college to realize a lot of things about my upbringing and the farm which made my decision to return a lot easier.

@Cornobbe Just got straight back to the farm and make the operation bigger and better from the start. Family wealth is created from multiple generations learning and growing together!

@nastrom83 With how farming has evolved, nobody gets a book of standard operating procedures, and it's probably naive to expect one. Learning from Dad the culture/nuances/history to make informed decisions for yourself is invaluable.

@Nebraskero I'd like to say your goal should be to go make half a million (or any higher arbitrary number) elsewhere, but you should let opportunity dictate the entry to go back lest you get stuck chasing for too long.
