Long time partner, mentor and friend @EdLinEmory received a massive and well deserved Ponsky Master educator award @SAGES_Updates today! Super proud. Many old trainees came to celebrate him.

Got an early birthday present!. The new curved vessel sealer for the da Vinci robot 🔥. Officially the new MVP in robotic HPB surgery. (DV5 only 😬) Video of it in action during a Whipple will be up on my YouTube channel tomorrow! @IntuitiveSurg #roboticsurgery

@SArshiaArshad Seeing too many cases where this is not performed and called a “subtotal.” Especially when it’s stapled. You have to open it first…

“Open ccy outperforms subtotal procedures” -BTK Podcast I disagree. Open ccy has its role, but a difficult lap ccy, is a difficult open ccy. Conv to open associated with ⬆️BDI. Subtotal has its own downsides, but BDI most important IMO. journals.lww.com/annalsofsurger…

Beginning my next phase of my professional career as a Professor of Surgery. Took 12 years of working, 6 years of training, 8 years of college/med school. Mainly a village of support and help from my partners, mentors, teachers, residents, friends, and especially my family.

Hard to have common metrics. Personally would like to know my conversion rate to surgery over 90 days. Wait times for patients to schedule a visit. Patient mix (new, est, pov). How long they wait in clinic. Would help build a more efficient schedule, adjust access & visit times.
Scott@sdavis81

Can any surgeons comment on metrics used in surgical clinics to incentivize process improvement and improved access? We found common metrics like “new patients seen in 10 days%” and “new patient mix” may ring true in medical clinics primarily and dont inspire for surgeons

“Hospitals that introduced RAS for common general surgery procedures were associated with an increase in MIS rates across different patient populations compared with hospitals that did not introduce RAS.”
Zhi Ven Fong, MD MPH DrPH@ZhiVenFongMD

1/As more 🏥s purchase 🤖s & more surgeons adopt robotic approaches to their cases, it begs the ❓: Did 🤖 truly enable more open cases to be done MIS, or did it just replace laparoscopy but at ⬆️cost? We tried answering this in this @AnnalsOpen📝. A🧵: journals.lww.com/aosopen/fullte…

I tell my patients that I’m a “GI plumber” but sometimes end up being one at home! I should stick with my day job. @EmorySurgery @SAGES_Updates

@TheNotoriousHPB For acute choles, my view never improved when I converted to open. Not sure why opening would reduce injury, I think you might recognize it early and can immediately fix. Agree to open when you can’t complete a case or ask for help.

Agree 100%. Most of the cholecystectomy complications I’ve managed have been related to the surgeon not converting to open. A common thing I hear is “visualization isn’t better open.” This is due to lack of understanding the principles of exposure and retraction in open surgery.
Syed A. Ahmad@SyedAAhmad5

Advancing minimally invasive surgery is essential BUT I have seen many newly trained surgeons who are uncomfortable converting to an OPEN procedure when necessary. We can’t forget to train our new surgeons to first learn the essentials.
