Today, I'm recommending four works by James Blish, an author revered not only for his thoughtful original fiction, but his foundational contributions to the Star Trek literary universe. A Case of Conscience (1958): A Jesuit biologist studies an alien world whose inhabitants achieve a morally perfect society without any concept of religion or sin. Won the Hugo Award for Best Novel. Earthman, Come Home (1955): Often cited as the single strongest book in the Cities in Flight tetralogy, this standalone novel sees New York City flying through a declining galaxy by means of its anti-gravity "spindizzy" drives. The Seedling Stars (1957): This fix-up novel pioneered the notion of pantropy, the idea that instead of terraforming worlds to meet the biological needs of humans, we should be altering human biology to adapt to alien environments. They Shall Have Stars (1956): The prequel that opens the Cities in Flight series is set in a near-future Earth sliding into authoritarian rule. It details the scientific breakthroughs like the spindizzy drives and anti-aging drugs that will eventually facilitate city spaceflight. Check out the quoted thread for the recommended works of Theodore Sturgeon, Alfred Bester, Bob Shaw, Clifford D. Simak, Algis Budrys, A.E. van Vogt, C.L. Moore, Cordwainer Smith, C.M. Kornbluth, D.G. Compton, Thomas M. Disch, Alice Bradley Sheldon (James Tiptree, Jr.), John Brunner, Judith Merril and Hal Clement.

Today, I'm recommending four works by Hal Clement, the dean of hard SF whose fiction was typified by scientific rigor and uncompromising world building. Mission of Gravity (1954): On the crushing, high-gravity world Mesklin, a human scientist enlists the help of a native, centipede-like ship captain to retrieve a lost probe. Needle (1950): A symbiotic alien detective merges with a teenage boy to hunt down a fugitive of his own species hiding amongst the members of a small island community. Iceworld (1953): An alien from a high temperature planet is enlisted to investigate a drug-smuggling operation on a frozen world. "Uncommon Sense" (1945): Clement's most famous short story is a hard SF puzzle in which an explorer, marooned by his mutinous crew, deduces the alien biology of a hostile world and turns it against them to reclaim the ship. Check out the quoted thread for the recommended works of Theodore Sturgeon, Alfred Bester, Bob Shaw, Clifford D. Simak, Algis Budrys, A.E. van Vogt, C.L. Moore, Cordwainer Smith, C.M. Kornbluth, D.G. BREAKING: Nicolle Wallace Just Drew A Sharp Distinction. She says the most dangerous people aren't necessarily those who believe election fraud claims. They're the ones who know better. Wallace specifically named Kevin Warsh, Todd Blanche, and Jay Clayton, arguing they are repeating election fraud narratives not because they believe them, but because it advances their careers. The accusation that powerful people are promoting those claims despite knowing they aren't true. That's a very different allegation.

Birthright citizenship was created after slavery to guarantee citizenship to all people born in America. Trump is now calling it a "shackle." Why does he hate Black people?

@GovPressOffice No, the amendment was passed to ensure that the children of slaves were citizens because Democrats like you wanted to screw them over. Birthright citizenship has zero support in the law or history. Tray again, retard.

In California, we went from 2% mail in ballots* to 89% mail in ballots. And at the same time, we had a large increase in the reported D/R ratio. Mathematically, our election results have been impossible starting in about 2018. Today, we "over 23 million registered voters" according to the California Sect of State. But we have about 21.5 million American adults 18 or over in California. * Known as absentee ballots back then, you had to have a reason and apply for one.

I’m a Trumper because I think people should vote in person (or have a reason if they don’t)? This was standard pretty much everywhere in America before Trump

@mtaibbi Hmm. . . man you really have gone off the deep end. Is there an address that I can return the books you wrote. You are not that same person who wrote about injustice, now you are a Trumper.

@K_DeRosa_NY135 Holy crap there’s a lot of people who are in denial of reality in this thread. Our president is unhinged. And if a reporter did talk, Democrat, the Democrat would handle the pushback with class, something that our decrepit ancient president has lacked since 1946.

I live in California and can tell you not a single person I talk to even knows who Raman is. They know Karen Bass let Los Angeles burn while partying in Ghana and they know Spencer Pratt is the wrecking ball to disrupt the machine. No one knows who Raman is. Why, four days later, is she getting the lion share of counted votes?
