I am quite aware of how they’re doing it. But that’s not the question. The article you referenced has tech less than 6 months into operation, and it’s based on low implementation so far. The article also says nothing about reduced downtimes and improved safety. I want to know what it looks like when every mine in Australia rolls this out. What the ports look like. What the roads look like. What the repairs and maintenance look like on Chinese manufactured equipment. What the insurance looks like after the first lithium fire that can’t be put out. Looking at one example in a small system less than 6 months old doesn’t really tell you all that much.

Can you do me a favour and map out what we’d need to replace our entire diesel transport network that moves everything from the mines to their final destination? Cost, infrastructure, vehicles, repairs and maintenance on both vehicles and roads due to weight etc. I’d be keen to see the work.

@TheHypocrisyCh1 @nickofnz Our own NEM. As more solar, wind & batteries have replaced more expensive gas the wholesale price of electricity fell last December. In 2024, retail electricity prices were reduced by 4.31% in real terms in the ACT, where their electricity supply is nett 100% RE.

@LividGrub_ @nickofnz A significant volcanic eruption only reduces sunlight intensity by less than 3% averaged over a year. Better battery technology is making electric trucks a viable alternative to diesel in a 500 km radius. However, the big breakthrough is autonomous operation. Ready soon.

having 100% renewables is all good and well until you realise that the economy still runs on diesel, renewables aint gonna plant crops, they wont drill ya gas, they wont transport the food to super markets, it wont build your houses and it cant transport every other good across the state. Also what happens theres a massive sandstorm or super volcanic erruption (which we are a few hundred thousand years overdue for) is your solar panels gonna save the state if sunlight is limited

@TheHypocrisyCh1 @nickofnz Thoug, because of the lower cost of RE as more & more comes on-line, SA wholesale electricity prices are dropping. Which is reducing electricity costs in real terms.

@TheHypocrisyCh1 @nickofnz SA has always had power above NEM avg prices because of high transmission costs. Lower pop density per Km of poles & wires means larger capex & opex costs amortised over fewer consumers. The disadvantage of having to go around two gulfs instead of how the crow flies.

@DavidPuls @EVCurveFuturist @me_allyann As to whether it's even technically possible, a Tesla has already driven itself (under supervision) from North Sydney to Melbourne. The tech is close to being able to confidently do it unsupervised. Once that happens, it's bye bye truck driving as a job.

The legislation authorising autonomous trucks to be on the road, will also ensure someone takes responsibility for the load being secure. Sensors will alert any loose straps etc.
