"If we don't take the Balkans, someone else will" caused the war, and afterwords "If we don't take the Middle East, someone else will" caused our present matter. And the jacked up thing is they weren't wrong! It's never wrong, it just sucks.

@hecubian_devil Exponentially multiplied in Piker's case, as I've got to imagine it's also his exceptional nose for his relatively underserved audience of [slurs libs use for leftists] with Very Online Low Social Trust Syndrome.

@Bram_R I agree, but I think that's independent of the specific stances of people like Tolentino or Piker--if anything, *their* low social trust is probably downstream of how online they are!

There’s an obvious question being missed or elided here: is this sentiment a cause, or a *byproduct* of declining social trust? I think it’s probably both, to some extent, but I’d lean towards “byproduct” predominating—and it seems like most of the libs are getting that wrong

This whole interview just makes me incredibly sad. Total breakdown of any moral code / sense of personal integrity / commitment to the public good. nytimes.com/2026/04/22/opi…

@hecubian_devil I'm 100% sure Lower Social Trust is being caused by The Internet, to the point my very leisurely backfilling of that conviction with motivated analysis only if ever absolutely necessary, makes perfect sense to me.

If people are behaving in low-trust ways, why is that? *Why* have they lost trust in institutions, rules, laws, or the social order generally? Is there real grievance at the heart of it? Is it fixable? Or are all these individuals just Morally Worse with no causal force?

@hecubian_devil Individuals can choose to behave as tho they value social trust more highly than it's felt. We rarely do bc we're rarely that intentional But someone broadcasting to an audience, a literal "Influencer," ought to behave w more wholesome intention. Great Power Great Responsibility

There’s a very idealistic (in the Marxist sense—that is to say, not empirical, not materialist) notion here that individuals should just *choose* to have trust in social institutions. We *ought* to all just behave in a high-trust way that respects the prevailing order

@hecubian_devil As a lib, I see the sentiment as a byproduct of declining social trust and that decline's complex origins. But that's why we REALLY don't want it to become a cause also, a full-throttle vicious spiral, which explains our apoplexy upon hearing it evangelized in mainstream channels

@PinstripeBungle Centrist or moderate? One absolutely can’t be “radicalized” into being a moderate, that’s more like mellowing out and learning some humility and acceptance of limits

"Oh, but Brian Thompson was a health care CEO. That's different." A lot of right-wingers think college professors are indoctrinating a generation of Communists. Would they be justified in assassinating them? Are bureaucrats who work for an unpopular government fair game?

The more I hear from this guy the more I stand by my original assessment. The throughline of his entire oeuvre is glazing and stoking political violence. Which makes sense because he’s hostile to liberal democracy and the mutual toleration it encourages.

Hasan Piker is legitimately a genocidal maniac who would kill tens of millions of people if he ever had real political power. Why are so many Democrats intent on including him in their political coalition? Are they aware this is a breaking point moment for a lot of people?

@Bram_R In this alternate universe where the Taba summit was conducted without the Israeli governments approval or representation- an absurd, demonstrable historical falsehood- that would send us back to camp david, which also unambiguously fell apart due to israeli intransigence.

The reason Israel "gave up on the peace process" (walked away from the Taba summit in 2001) was that Israel is a liberal democracy in which peace has always been wildly unpopular, so Ehud Barak broke them off in a failed attempt to preserve his election chances. That's it.
Matthew Yglesias@mattyglesias

Israelis gave up on the peace process for reasons that I sympathize with. But that choice has had the negative consequences that Olmert, Tzipi Livni, Obama, J Street, etc all warned about at the time. slowboring.com/p/if-israel-do…

The logic of "the Iron Dome insulates Israel from making peace" is that if Israel suffered a sufficient number of civilian casualties they'd make concessions of some kind is disproven by the aftermath of October 7th. Actually inflicting pain on Israel drew a severe response.
Prem Thakker@prem_thakker

Dr. Adam Hamawy (a vet who saved Duckworth's life in Iraq & saved lives in Gaza) said Iron Dome insulates Israel from making peace. His NJ-12 opponent Sue Altman said he’s "cheerleading and wishing” for dead Israeli kids. Coalition of Muslims, Jews, Hindus slam Altman’s smear:
