What you have is people who wanted games to be art, to employ their art friends, and to be completely subsidized by governments, corporations etc to carry forward their personal values and messages. I get wanting better pay in the industry, but this is how contracts work. You agreed to a flat fee before anyone knew the movie would become a massive hit. If you wanted upside, you could have negotiated for points, royalties, or a profit-sharing agreement. Taking the guaranteed money, watching the movie become huge, and then saying you deserve a cut after the fact is ridiculous.
