IS THIS THING ON?: This was sort of bewildering. Too messy yet not messy enough, too sad yet too tidily wrapped up. I also have so many pedantic questions about character ages and careers and the like, which is never a good sign. Very good Arnett performance in a not-good movie.

I know the whole thing about this film is that Brady Corbet had final cut. I respect and appreciate that and laud that. Art, baby! But maybe he needed someone's voice in his ear here and there. And not because it's long. Long is fine! (Related: Normalize intermissions in movies!)

Update on the MAGA ecosystem: - Trump is pushing MAGA to embrace MIGA, which in reality is more about Israeli interests than Iranian or American ones…and a distraction from his pedo scandals and crumbling economy. - the MAGA America First crowd, (MAGA-AF) is mad at Trump for breaking virtually all his promises, from no new wars to exposing epstein pedos to getting yanked around by Israel. - the MAGA Trump is Lord crowd (MAGA-TL) does not care what Trump does. They’re a cult and he validates all their hate. They’re mad at MAGA-AF for being mad at Trump. - the AIPAC crowd loves MAGA becoming MIGA. It was their doing. They’re mad at MAGA-AF for calling out Trump or Israel’s excessive influence on America. - the hardcore nationalists hate MIGA. They’re mad at AIPAC and Trump for turning MAGA into MIGA. - the MAGA grifters crowd (MAGA-G) continue to take money from whoever will pay them. They want their revenue streams intact and couldn’t care less about MAGA or MIGA. You’re mostly caught up.

Trump didn’t fire Kristi Noem because she failed to respond to the floods in Texas which claimed the lives of at least 100 people. He didn’t fire her because Americans were murdered by her rabid masked goons. He didn’t fire her for posing for photos in front of human beings in cages like they were livestock. He didn’t fire her for racially profiling Latinos, African-Americans, Arab Americans and Asian Americans. He didn’t fire her because she was arresting legal permanent residents and US citizens and detaining them illegally. He didn’t fire her because she was keeping children in fetid, rancid concentration camps without access to clean water, fresh food or medical care. He didn’t fire her for turning our cities into militarized war zones. He fired her because she made him “look bad.” That was the red line. None of the other things were.

Jesus Christ. People are not bemoaning the end of the ayatollah and many in his regime. So let’s dispense with this ridiculous notion that having any concerns implies some kind of support for a clerical theocracy. What people are rightfully concerned about is what happens next. Americans are tired of endless excursions in the Middle East, loss of American lives, trillions wasted only for these regions to end up more unstable and dangerous than they were before. This is our lived experience and to pretend it’ll be different this time after 30+ years of various versions of the same thing, is insane. Iranians should be concerned too. If the aggressors do not have the stomach to fully dismantle a highly entrenched clerical regime with hardliners embedded across their political, military and theocratic institutions, then it will be shades of the Taliban all over again. The hardliners will wait us out, quickly reconstitute, crush the dissenters and double up on their vow to hurt Americans. What Iranians really need, we don’t have the principles or the patience to give them. This isn’t a hypothetical. We’ve been living this bullshit cycle for decades. We go in half-cocked, do a half-assed job, take off when the bills and body counts get too high…and watch everything quickly fall apart. And this time, with the most delusional and incompetent administration leading the charge, it doesn’t look to be any different. They barely have a concept of a plan. It would be nice for our elected representatives to put down their pompoms for once and think it through.

Maybe I can help you understand. Trump made a series of significant promises to win the loyalty of his base. From America-centric policies, lower grocery prices, no new wars to exposing the “deep state pedophiles” preying on our children. When he started breaking all his promises, the rational ones rightfully called him out on it. However, those who made MAGA their whole identity, folks like you, couldn’t bring themselves to admit he had duped them. The shame of it all made them burrow deep into denial. Now they wander the wasteland of social media like zombies, mauling anyone who dares confront them with the truth. Hope this helps.

No other president in the history of this country has ever dismissed the combat deaths of our men and women in uniform as “just the way that it is.” None. Dear Ma & Pa MAGA, You say that Donald Trump “loves our troops.” So, once again, I want to know why that is. Is it because he received 5 deferments (for a fake medical condition) from the draft during the Vietnam War? Or is it the time he bragged that “avoiding STDs” was his personal equivalent of military combat? Is it because he demeaned a POW, attacked a Gold Star family and told a military widow that her deceased husband “knew what he had signed up for.” Was it the time he downplayed the traumatic head injuries suffered by our troops after a missile attack as “not real” because they weren’t “missing hands and limbs.” Is it the time he said he didn’t want to be seen with war-wounded amputees and to keep them forever out of his sight, or the time he called our fallen heroes of war “suckers” and “losers”? Was it the time he skipped an event in France honoring our Marines because it was raining? Is it all the times he called our military leaders “dumb” and “overrated” while calling terrorists like the Taliban & Hezbollah “very smart”? Was it the time he demanded the flags after McCain’s death be returned to full mast, or the time he demanded that a ship bearing his name be blocked from view? Was it when he suggested that the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff deserved to be executed? Maybe it was when he asked Gen. John Kelly (who lost his son in combat) why anyone would sign up for service because as far as he saw it, there was “nothing in it for them.” Perhaps it was hearing him say that as President he would allow our adversary to attack the same allies this country’s Greatest Generation fought beside and died defending? Or was it when he insulted Nikki Haley’s husband for currently serving our country overseas? Was it when he said the Medal of Freedom he gave to his rich donors was “much better” than the Medal of Honor because the recipients of that honor are “in bad shape or dead.” Was it when he insisted on using the sacred shrine that is Arlington National Cemetery, the final resting place for more than 400,000 veterans and their families, as a photo op for his campaign despite the fact that he wasn’t allowed to do so and officials there were attacked by his staff for trying to stop him? Was it when he decimated the VA and gutted a suicide prevention hotline meant to help our veterans in their darkest hour? Is it the fact that he’s fired more of our veterans than any other president in our history? Or was it when he skipped the dignified transfer of the four soldiers who died in Lithuania so he could host a glittery gala at his gilded golf motel for the folks who funded 9/11? Was it the time he droned on about “trophy wives” while wearing a MAGA hat to the West Point graduation? Or the time he talked about the “Olympics” and the “World Cup” on Memorial Day at Arlington National Cemetery? Or was it when he called for the execution of several Democratic lawmakers because they made a video reminding service members to refuse unlawful orders? Which of those things makes you believe he loves our troops? Which one? Because he just sent three of our service members to their deaths for an illegal war he never justified, never explained, didn’t seek Congressional approval for, and has no plan to extract us from. The guy who PROMISED you he was the one to end ALL FOREIGN WARS is using OUR troops as props in a deadly game that is undoubtedly lining HIS pockets while making all of us far less safe at the same damn time. And I just don’t understand how you don’t see that. So what is it? Because for the life of me, I can’t figure it out, and I’d really, really love to know.
