Here's the gist - Their media is controlled by white racists (vestiges of apartheid), spreading anti-black + anti-immigrant narratives (think maga - filthy immigrants are taking our jobs, littering our streets and r*ping our women - bullshit like that), while in reality their disenfranchisement stems from white capitalists (<10% of the population) owning 70% of the land, and weilding overwhelming economic and political power over them for decades. I love SA for bringing the Gaza genocide case before the ICJ, but falling for white supremacist anti-black narratives to the point of violent pogroms and murdering other African immigrants on the streets is unacceptable. The irony is tragic - especially from the country that gave the world Mandela (whose grandson was on of the recent flotillas), the word ubuntu, and the first country to bring the Gaza genocide case before the ICJ - now kicking out the very people from the nations who actually provided them assistance during apartheid. I have been to South Africa many times, but only for conferences. Unfortunately, we were unlikely to meet, because I stayed in the parts of South Africa owned by your actual oppressors: the landowners you are too afraid to confront, and the places you could not afford to stay in. I also paid a visit to Madiba’s statue because, as a child, I stood in queues, like millions of African children of my generation, to donate my school money to the campaign for his freedom. 😁
