@cam3ron___ @1045espn Yea it wasnt directing it at him per se. Tbf these guys are elite athletes so you probably wouldn’t see a huge difference but you’d think as an nfl scout you’d want to know how fast guys are in pads, how good receivers can catch, how quarterbacks throw, etc. Always found it odd

LSU LB West Weeks 2nd 40 attempt. Weeks was MOVING. His brother, Bauer Sharp, and Garrett Nussmeier all ran over to congratulate him. Unofficially had him at sub 4.5. 👀👀 #JustDifferent #LSUProDay

Squeakiest wheel gets the grease. Irony is that the majority of the public that this matter applies to (Louisiana residents) don’t want this information released or would support it being released if names were redacted. So who are they really fighting for here? All of the other fan bases who don’t live there and are voicing their support for record release don’t care about the names of players or the suit itself. They are simply supporting them for the sole purpose of seeing LSU get sued and wanting lsu to crash and burn

Genuine question from one professionally trained journalist to another: @ByPiperHutch, would you be satisfied if your public records request was fulfilled with the names of student-athletes redacted or anonymized to protect their privacy?

Don’t need a lawsuit. How? By writing up a revenue sharing contractual agreement that a student athlete signs. Such funds are capped at $20.5 million and are the same amount of funds that all sec schools have available to pay to student athletes at the school’s athletic dept’s discretion. Just saved her a lot of legal fees

Re-read.. do state legislators decide who gets the scholarship? Or if they did decide that then do they still? If they don’t directly decide then do they have to approve who LSU decides to give the scholarship to? Assuming they still do, well then I think that is different if they have no say in the $ amounts being given to players from that $20.5 million pool of rev share funds. I could see the political argument if they are responsible for approving individual player contracts but lsu can pay whoever as much as they want from that $20.5 million and it is solely at their discretion then I no longer agree with my first post and don’t think the public has any right to that information or at least not the same right they did for scholarships that were decided by or approved by state legislators

So I was about to be real proud of myself and say why not go after scholarships to non athletes. Then I googled it. While I still don’t like it or agree with it I can see the argument that athletes shouldn’t get special treatment. If it’s public knowledge that John Doe received Blank scholarship for ~$30k to come to LSU and study Subject so why isn’t it public knowledge/record that Sam Leavitt received Blank for $X amount to come to LSU and play football. Again don’t like it but this is the first time actually understanding an argument for them to be released

@jande82 @ZVR09 I'm not the reporter on the story but I literally want to know who is being paid and how much. Who is the state deciding to give this money to and how much is each person getting? Is anyone with political connections getting a piece of this?

@AYSSPORTS @BlakeJRuffino Government serves the state of Louisiana. Quite the stretch here comparing the state government to the state school….

Get where you’re coming from and I agreed yesterday but more I think about it. 1) the top players will have NIL deals too so even knowing their rev share agreement doesn’t mean you know what they are really making and 2) the teams that would be poaching the lsu players that you would not want to be poached will find out what players are making if they want. We saw it all throughout the portal this year. Agents are sleazy

It 1000% is a competitive disadvantage if other schools in the conference do not have to give the same information. No one seems to want to answer this question, what are you going to do once you find out (if you find out) what each player makes?
Jeff Palermo@jeffpalermoLRN

This lawsuit is not an attack on LSU or to create a competitive disadvantage. It’s asking the courts to determine if a public entity that uses public funds to pay players, should we know how much each player receives? LSU’s reason for not releasing is inconsistent with state law.

This lawsuit makes sense if it wasn’t public knowledge that LSU allocates $20.5 million of “public funds” to athletes or if the $20.5 millions wasn’t a hard cap for revenue sharing deals. I have yet to hear a valid explanation for how obtaining the individual player contracts benefits the public or why the public has a right to that information. If it’s not about exposing players then why not sue for how LSU spends scholarship money to non student athletes. Does the state have to approve each individual contract and scholarship? I’d think that is at the discretion of LSU and state just approves the amount of funds allowed to be spent.

If the end goal is to be able to disclose Player X is making X dollars then why not offer to drop the lawsuit if LSU agrees to provide the information with player’s names redacted or changed to Player A, Player B, Player C, etc? I don’t see a legitimate reason for needing names and also don’t see how disclosing contracts without names would put LSU at a competitive disadvantage. With the exception of maybe Leavitt or Seatin, you wouldn’t be able to tell which contract is associated with which player

If LSU agreed to provide you with individual contracts if they were allowed to redact the individual players names or changed them to Football Player X, Baseball Player Y, Softball Player Z, would that be satisfactory? I’m genuinely trying to understand the reasoning for needing/wanting to know how money is spent at the individual student athlete level. Redacting names would eliminate concerns from fans that it would create a competitive disadvantage. Actually seems like that would solve a lot and would be a good compromise

@droid043 I was actually describing how I think it’s important to publicize even mundane public expenditures and how I regularly do that kind of reporting. My outlet is not paywalled and doesn’t have ads or paid subscriptions. So no benefit from more clicks.
