In Garth Ennis’s original comic books, Frenchie is a much more bizarre, almost cartoonish stereotype who wears a striped shirt and a beret, and boasts an incredibly absurd backstory involving jousting on bicycles. It is true that it’s homophobic but not intentionally (he apologized for it in the letter pages at the time!). it’s way less homophobic than what the comics of the era were doing (Starlin wanted to give Robin AIDS!). It’s not misogynist or poorly written at all.
