@Synd944935 sorry i think there's some misunderstanding, i think both of these instances would be indie games. i don't see where how much money it cost matters. like you're suggesting, creative independence is crucial.

@terminallyOL In that case it stops being indie if that rich buddy tells you what to put in your game. How about crowdfundings, then ? If a game comes from one, is it also not an indie to you ? Even if the devs make the game on their own terms but with having some budget now ?

@Synd944935 whenever i see budget as a barrier, it does make it feel like there has to be a level of suffering for some people to call it an indie game. if your rich buddy pays your bills and gives you as much money as you need to make whatever you want, it's not indie.

@GhoulDenn @AsgarZigel i get it if there's an employee cap people go off of. wikipedia says it's 50-100 employees makes a 'AA' studio, but supergiant hasn't hit that yet. i've never seen what an 'A' studio is, it all just feels like marketing terms.

@Mirs_____ @AsgarZigel what is a studio you would consider a single A studio? also, i know wiki isn't the best source, but they call AA studio with 50-100 employees. i don't know how to count freelancers or translators into all of that, but i'm sure hades two had quite a few of those.

@terminallyOL @TheoTheFurry_ They have to be financially independent. Fund themselves and publish themselves. The game cannot be influenced by consultants. No money from outside sources. A small team, max 30 people. Max budget 10 million. Anything more than that is a AA+ studio.

@AsgarZigel hades is a bizarre inclusion too, supergiant games is an independent game studio with something like forty employees. it seems like there's an arbitrary line drawn in how many people are involved and how much money it cost to make, i just want to know where.
