@andrewkornuta @snowmaker I'm getting into a totally different field, but see a similar phenomenon.
Slogans like "we need new and better culture" sell well on social media. But thousands of small projects already exist. The barriers are in printing and logistics much more than shiny new startups.
English

@snowmaker "request for startups" even though thousands of these companies already exist in the US and are busting their ass every day... this isn't novel, it's arrogant and tone-deaf.

If you want to reindustrialize America, this is an amazing list of ideas to work on.

@NoahRayWrites These all point back to life experience. Either direct or by observing others.
Which is itself as basic as editing. You have to ask more questions and read more books than you write.
English

What I would give to have more advanced arguements, such as:
-Where Deus Ex Machinas can be good.
-What kind of sins are unforgivable for a protagonist to commit. And when they work for the story.
-Writing the opposite gender convincingly.
But we (as a community) can't even get past basics like such as proper editing being important.

Spend enough time in any field/hobby, and you’ll start to develop taste for really subtle things.
A weird one I picked up (without particularly trying) is lenses + image sensors.
Every camera sensor “emulates” the concept of what’s called a Sensiotmetric curve. It’s a whole field that studies light-sensitive materials. On digital, linear sensors, it’s up to the camera manufacturer to choose the curve.
If I had to guess, once you exclude smartphones, ~75-80% of youtube is filmed on Sony, often with Sigma lenses. Personally I can’t stand it; Sony has this green tint (esp in the noise + the whites), and modern photography lenses are too good! Much sharper than the human eye can resolve naturally.
There’s a reason why so many DoPs purposefully “de-tune” lenses in hollywood.
Canon is usually pretty nice, not overly sharp, but a little too red in the skin. Panasonic is decent, but leans quite magenta for some reason.
Blackmagic (which I’m biased/partial to) has this interesting black crush which is noticeable. I hesitate to call it “filmic” because that term is overused/cringe…but admittedly the dynamic range *is* a bit film-y.
RED cameras tend to look nice...a little sharp…but you don’t see them a lot on youtube. Makes sense; usually at that level you’re doing more commercial work.
And then of course there is ARRI. Obviously the best, but who has that? ;)

I see the Boston City Hall as one of the weirdest examples of truth in advertising yet devised. It’s an inverted pyramid that, because of the odd way the first floor is handled, never quite seems to touch the ground — thus it’s perfect for a city dominated by a massively overinflated bureaucracy that makes all its decisions in a state of serene disconnection from the real world.
The sheer barren desolation of the plaza in front of it is a nice touch, too.

More supervillains should name themselves after their favorite Transformers.

Will "Scooby Doo is ackshually a critique of the Moderns because it has a talking dog" become the next "Captain America is ackshually woke-left because he fought fascists like Red Skull" ?
Maybe the Death of the Author is inescapable.

@BayouBomber You can write a book like this too:
"Claude, please write a self-help book about publishing with AI to make $20k a month, and write a series of posts with a high probability of generating sales from people susceptible to get-rich-quick schemes. Include a book cover."

@Rippalorian It's claiming Hoppe was Made with AI? Now Hans is worried they'll say that to him too.

@Bill__Oliger @RedHedgedragon I go to the library also (some books are too rare/expensive), but I like having books with 24/7 access. I don't see it as an either/or. I give books out to friends too.
At $10-30 per book, two a month for ten years is 240 books.
English

@CatalyticComics @RedHedgedragon $100 per month is not an insignificant amount of money when a free alternative stove exists

1) ever heard of Goodwill?
2) I don’t want books that aren’t worth owning
3) I value books and therefore I am willing to spend money on them
public emmany #1 🦬@theemmacasey
All the people saying they don't go to the library: are you people millionaires?? Cannot imagine *buying* every book you want to read. You don't have to browse in there. You can put things on hold and just pick them up! Plus half the things I read are ebooks from Hoopla and Libby

So, @_panthalassa operated mostly in secret for a decade. And what it built is nuts.
Massive, massive floating data centers that drive themselves out to sea and then capture water inside of them to spin a turbine and power GPUs. Look at these things.
