@MadsDavies I'm interested in your example because a sole patron is within their rights to behave like this, but a bishop could be equally awkward and refuse to license their candidate. It's in everyone's interests to work together.

Interested in people's experience of patrons, when filling a vacancy. We ran this opinion piece a few years ago (in this case, the patron turned down several of those who the Bishop, Archdeacon and PCC wanted to shortlist for interview) churchtimes.co.uk/articles/2021/…

@WalkerMarcus Well done. I suspect just a small victory in a battle that will be hard fought. I notice they managed to kick the redistribution of funds off the agenda.

@MadsDavies Yes and Mr Nye's response to that motion shows how hard they will fight to keep the power.

@CharliePeer “This side of the grave, money brings power — the financial flows of the past 25 years have disrupted the ancient balance of authority in the Church" - the paper from the Gloucester diocesan secretary v interesting churchtimes.co.uk/articles/2025/…

Absolutely feeble argument. Given the huge number of strings attached to SDF and now DIP funding, ludicrous to suggest that the Commissioners could not place stricter conditions on LINC.

Asked if a "big stick" can't be deployed, chair of Archbishops Council's finance committee: “I know everyone feels that there is this huge weight of the centre of the Church imposing its will across the Church. We have no power at all. I cannot require a diocese to do x y or z.”

It would be a relatively simple piece of work for the Commissioners to identify the (say) 5% poorest parishes nationally and then say "we will fund a stipend in each of these". Dioceses would not be unhappy with that.

@MadsDavies "gosh I have no power" is a line that has worn very thin, especially from the national church which has deployed financial power so overtly.

@CharliePeer Was interesting in light of other conversations about whether we acknowledge the power that we have!

Today is Childermas, the feast of the Holy Innocents, on the fourth day of Christmas. It's a fitting day for the Coventry Carol and other medieval lullaby-laments, which give voice to the grief that lies near the heart of the Christmas season aclerkofoxford.blogspot.com/2014/12/lullay…

CLERGY! I’m just 28 names away from an amazing milestone for the assisted suicide letter. Have you signed it yet? Do you have networks you could share it in for more signatures? Publication is due within a week. DM me for more information.

@talkChristianly I like your diagnosis but just wondering what "fearless honesty" would look like for you? Some people would use that as a euphemism for closing churches but I don't think that's what you're arguing for.

I think it's churches like this which have felt overlooked by many national initiatives. Or they haven't secured national funding so now feel even more 'left behind'. Surely we need a fearless honesty about the challenges facing such churches - which are the CofE's backbone.

I've been trying to put my finger on what I found disquieting about the Archbishop of York's Guardian interview. I realise it was an easily overlooked comment he made about the vitality of the local church. (1/7)

@P_G_Anderson Fair enough. I read your original as a comment on theological diversity in general.

@CharliePeer True, but The Five Guiding Principles, for example, are now treated as an article of faith, to which prospective clergy must subscribe.

@seatrout @MadsDavies Personally I think this one of the more positive aspects of the whole affair, if it encourages us to stop hiding behind policy as an excuse for inaction.

@MadsDavies Yes — and underlying this shift is an entirely unrealistic faith in what box ticking compliance can achieve. It's voodoo management again.

Among the Makin recommendations is establishment of "international reciprocal safeguarding procedures" in the Anglican Communion. Looking at current protocol I don't believe it would have applied to Smyth, who did not (as far as we know) pursue authorised ministry in South Africa
