An article I wrote, based on my doctoral research, kindly published in 'Faith & Worship', Trinity 2018. It's about the birth of English Protestantism, and the relationship between a Reformed liturgy, almsgiving, & the deep foundations of our Welfare State: scribd.com/document/40057…

Yesterday after the Pentecost service a visitor shared her story. Her pregnant sister was murdered by her partner, in Britain illegally. His appeals against mental health confinement torture her family 18 years on. We prayed for justice and Christ's peace. islingtongazette.co.uk/news/crime/212…

Our Lady of Liverpool duly honoured with festive blooms for Pentecost, when St Luke records she was with the disciples, as they received the Spirit. This statue of S. Mary del Quay, the chapel's medieval dedication, was commissioned in the 1990s from local sculptor Arthur Dooley.

We welcomed the new Bishop of Warrington, Simon Robinson, today. Reflecting on the persistent allure of violence, he recalled a 2019 visit to Tuzla, Bosnia's "Bone Factory", where skeletons of Muslim victims of Srebrenica are being pieced together. I was with him and wrote this.

Last year I returned to being a parish priest, from the different, specialist ministry of a cathedral canon. The Rector of Liverpool faces quite a few big public occasions in the year, but it's the teenagers of the church who are the real litmus test. So, this message was a gift.

@DrFrancisYoung @PeterKalve @cath_cov I agree. It's pure clericalism, in which the language of prayer learned by heart is rewritten, time and again, often to make a fashionable contemporary political point. Much more radical, anyway, to allow the Crucified Son of God to interrogate domineering male-ness from within.

@PeterKalve @P_G_Anderson @cath_cov Personally, the theology isn't the issue for me; it's the deviation from tradition that liturgical innovation represents that I can't stomach, and the way it sunders us from the past and from our ancestors

I had the dispiriting experience of attending a liturgy of the Church of Scotland last year, in which even the Lord's Prayer had been rewritten to avoid "patriarchal", "oppressive" language, and so was flat, and banal - the polar opposite of a Reformed conduit to Christ in Glory.

"Looking across the North Channel, this Anglican offers a lament for the Church of Scotland, while yet hoping that there are other voices in that Church, voices encouraging the Church of Scotland to rediscover its historic identity and vocation ..." Link below.

@P_G_Anderson I think there is an unfortunate misconception about 'marianism'. I really tried to emphasise that everything about Mary is pointing to Christ. The rosary, of course, does not replace scripture or prayer, but it is a helpful aid to help us contemplate and mediate on the Word.

@AnthonyTeasdale If Liverpool Central Station is going to become one of the busiest in the country the Lyceum is surely perfectly positioned to be a very profitable restaurant.

@P_G_Anderson Full agreement. The Lyceum is seemingly in a state of disrepair as no business wants to take it on. I'm mystified by this.

I'm always up for infrastructure, and hope this happens. But, why does it look like the trilby hat by grandad wore? Couldn't we build something that looks either a) Sleek Scandi modernism (like Oxford St) or b) An austere Victorian box Like Kings' Cross.

#NEWS | Liverpool’s busiest gateway is set for a major transformation with a leading specialist design team appointed to shape a new long-term vision for the Central Station area. Led by Hawkins\Brown, the team will develop a Strategic Regeneration Framework (SRF) to guide ambitious plans for investment and renewal around the station, helping to unlock its full potential as a welcoming and well-connected city centre arrival point. A proposed redevelopment of rail services at Liverpool Central station provides the opportunity for a radical transformation of the area, and will act as a catalyst for redevelopment. Liverpool Central welcomes more than 14.8 million passengers a year and plays a critical role in connecting the city centre, retail core and the Knowledge Quarter. The SRF will help ensure future development around the station is comprehensive, deliverable and aligned with the city’s wider regeneration and growth ambitions. With conceptual CGIs released of the area, the visionary 86-acre project aims to create a world-class transport hub to transform connectivity, drive regeneration, and unlock economic growth in Liverpool City Region and the North West of England. Such is the scale of the project it would greatly enhance access to jobs, housing, leisure, and business while advancing the region and the county’s net zero goals. Liverpool Central has been chosen as a pilot project for the Government’s reformed 'Green Book' appraisal process, aimed at unlocking a £5bn transformation of the station and surrounding area. Liverpool City Region Mayor @MetroMayorSteve said: 'This is a chance for us to think bigger about the future of one of the key front doors to Liverpool – creating a greener, safer and better connected gateway that works for residents, businesses and the millions of people who pass through it every year. 'Working with Liverpool City Council and partners, we can make sure this becomes more than a transport upgrade – but a catalyst for wider regeneration, investment and opportunity in the heart of the city.' I used to be Vicar of a chunk of the Makerfield Constituency. Talk of victimised communities can be patronising: Coal and Cotton were the Kings of the North, funding e.g. much council housing. Wigan dug up all her coal. A brave candidate might push for fracking the Bowland Basin.

@MinooFramroze Tremendously strong kinship with this ethos in my patch - and like Glasgow, Liverpool is bedecked with grand, and frequently grandiloquent Edwardian memorials.

Are not Glaswegian virtues - warmth, wildness, charisma, enterprise - exactly what we miss and vainly seek in the drained cadaver of imperial glory?!

Today I am getting my niche political kicks out of watching people discuss what a "wool" is and whether Andy Burnham is one - or is he a Scouser, a Manc, "from leafy Cheshire", metropolitan elite or something else. He's definitely an Evertonian though, of that there is no doubt!

@cath_cov What sublime praise. Thank you. Others might make less flattering comments about this approach of benign neglect. For me the pond is a portal, an alien world in close proximity, and a place therefore that encourages contemplation of the "maker of all things visible and invisible"

Every parsonage I've lived in has been graced with a wildlife pond in the garden within months of my arrival. A pond (not for ornamental fish) sustains the local ecology, and enriches it. This respectable online supplier of British amphibians is excellent: wildlifepondaquarium.co.uk/frogs-newts?pa…

Re-reading Homer's Odyssey, for the first time in a very long time. I wish my Greek was good enough to tackle the original text, but even in translation it's so vivid and enthralling. Hardly an original observation, but as well as being a classic, it's the most exhilarating yarn.
