This is so legitimately disrespectful to Tolkien and his legacy. I’m irate. Firstly Colbert is a poser, he may know the names and the years but he fundamentally misunderstands the message and the core of the story as it doesn’t align with his worldview, thus the very soul of this project will be tainted with themes antithetical to Tolkien’s work. Secondly, these are ideas Tolkien never would have even wanted. You can argue with The Hunt for Gollum that it’s at least just telling stuff already in the novel. But a whole new secondary adventure, when his appendices and his manuscripts in HoME already explain the lives these characters lived, and peaceful ones at that? Absolutely not This is a blatant disregard for lore, sure, but more importantly this is a disregard of Tolkien entirely. Disgusting.

Lord of the Rings has no sequel. Lord of the Rings needs no sequel.

The idea that a criminal can bypass border security and then the US taxpayer is on the hook to pay $40,000 per year for eighteen years to educate their children is simply insane. It never should have been allowed to happen.

To be clear, DHS's 100 million deportations ethnic cleansing agenda is spreading throughout the right-wing echo chamber as it intended. It is only a matter of time before this extremism becomes standard rhetoric for GOP candidates.

My take on the current discourse about the Christian man with the formerly “promiscuous” wife is that many of the comments towards the man and his wife have been uncharitable, cruel, and certainly un-Christian, but also that Christians these days often tend to be far too eager to tell the entire world about their past sins, which in most cases shows a lack of discretion and a certain lack of the sort of shame one should feel even for repented sins. Also, as a parent, I strongly believe that you generally should avoid telling your kids about your own wayward youth, because the kids will take such stories as an indication that they too can go off and have fun sinning and things will turn out okay, just as they did for you. Also you undermine your own moral authority when you instruct your children not to do the very things you have admitted to having done yourself. Finally, the man’s line about how his wife “is more pure than most virgins” is prideful and shows a kind of competitiveness and vanity that should simply not ever appear in any Prodigal Son style testimony. Imagine if the Prodigal Son had returned and announced himself not only repentant but “more pure” than the brother who stayed? It would kind of destroy the point of the story. So in summary I basically disagree with everyone on this.

The fact that Colbert is a Tolkien encyclopedia and knows a lot of lore, yet it has clearly had ZERO impact on his own politics or personal virtue, indicates that merely enjoying and geeking out on the High Stories is insufficient.

If ICE can just show their face at an airport and the crowd immediately clears out then slow TSA lines aren’t the main problem. And it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out what the problem is.
