@stephrstephr It happened because digital technology removed journals’ need for page limits (dating myself here) and because editors don’t police reviewer demands for additional (and expensive) experiments. If it ends up in supplemental data it really was not necessary in the first place.

Anonymous Comment found to explain why PhD/pdoc getting longer "the amount of data needed per paper has gone up 8-10 fold since 1995. Editors want 4 papers worth of data per article and not limiting comments from reviewers that always ask for more" *How did this happen?*

Live television brings nearly 24 hours straight of sporting disappointments in multiple sports on multiple continents somewhat redeemed by a nice home-cooked dinner; still hope it’s a light work Monday tomorrow :)

Today’s first approval of a CRISPR therapeutic is a milestone for the technology innovators, but also for the biologists who directed the machinery. Congratulations Stu Orkin, @bloodgenes Vijay Sankaran and colleagues! statnews.com/2023/11/16/u-k…

@BrotmanBaty @seattlechildren @UW @UWMedicine @SPFregoso Fortunate to have incredibly talented scientists-in-training like Manith Atapattu and his Summer Scholar colleague Elizabeth Guadarrama in the lab, mentored by the incomparable Dr. Santiago Fregoso. Watch out world! These folks are the bright future of biomedical research.

@baym Research appears to cost more than it recovers because institutions make up their indirect cost numbers and then believe them.

This is often said, but it doesn't make it correct. At an institution like Harvard Medical, with ~70% overhead, the only departments that bring in more overhead than they cost are ones without wet labs Once you realize research costs the university money, things make more sense
Brenton Wiernik 🏳️‍🌈@bmwiernik

@giladfeldman Because universities (at least in the US) are a money making business whose principal income is government grants. All incentives for departments are to get their faculty to bring in as much grant money as possible. That’s the only thing that matters ultimately
