QBI welcomes Dr John Lee, our new Ross Maclean Senior Research Fellow whose translational research into motor neurone disease (MND) has already reached clinical testing. A compound he began studying during his PhD in 2009 recently completed Phase 1B trials after more than 15 years of development. He is also collaborating with a New Zealand company to design liquid drug formulations tailored for MND patients who lose the ability to swallow. The Ross Maclean Fellowship established by Jeff Maclean AM in memory of his father, Index Group founder Ross Maclean who lost his battle with MND in 2005, offers crucial support to advance these ambitious projects. “Funding is always scarce in research – this fellowship gives me the opportunity to push drug programs closer to clinical trials while also collaborating with QBI neuroscientists on new discovery-based ideas,” says Dr Lee. Congratulations to QBI Emeritus Professor Perry Bartlett, who has been awarded $1.8 million from @FightMND to progress his Phase II clinical trial evaluating the efficacy, safety, pharmacokinetics, and immunogenicity of a drug called NUN-004 in patients with motor neurone disease (MND). "This program demonstrates that basic neuroscientific discoveries made in Australia can be developed all the way through from preclinical studies into product manufacture into promising clinical trials that are at the forefront internationally," says Emeritus Professor Bartlett. Dr. Barbora Fulopova @BarbFulop from @QldBrainInst will explore proprioception, our body's vital sense of self-awareness. Her project at the University of Fribourg 🇨🇭 aims to develop advanced robotic systems to understand how the brain processes proprioceptive information.
