Are we too cortex exclusive? 🧠 We found that perceptual decisions depend on a cortical pathway through thalamus (transthalamic), even though corticocortical projections are intact. Transthalamic pathways thus play a major but underappreciated role in perception. 1/5

We're thrilled to introduce the #ANS2024 Plenary Lecture speaker, A/Prof Jenny Rodger of the @PerronInstitute. She will discuss repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation for sceptics: how understanding mechanisms drives translation and innovation ⚡️

What is the nature of sensory prediction error signals in the neocortex? Our research published in @Nature reveals that these error signals are amplified responses to unexpected inputs, mediated by a cooperative thalamocortical circuit mechanism! 1/4 nature.com/articles/s4158…

@mark_s_blumberg No, for some it's clear. But our current 'map' of perceptual decision-making is the sequential activation of cortical regions (sensory to association to motor), which is presumed to be via direct corticocortical projections, a textbook account that is only recently challenged.
