Several days ago, I argued that Brexit is, to a large extent, responsible for the UK's political and social crisis. Many Brits challenged me rather aggressively. Fair enough. At the time, it was largely my instinct as an economist and data scientist rather than a conclusion backed by a deep review of the evidence. So I went and read the literature. Study after study reaches the same conclusion: Brexit imposed a substantial economic cost on the UK. Sometimes one chart tells the whole story. Real GDP per capita since 2016 shows the UK dramatically underperforming both the Eurozone and the United States. I'm now convinced I was right. And yes, I believe Brexit will one day be remembered as one of the most successful KGB operations in history. The genius of it wasn't making Britain stronger. It was convincing Britain to weaken itself.

It’s been a total mess ever since, and one of the reasons I’d rather split my time between Ukraine and Europe than move back to the UK. 🇬🇧 The UK is a bit like a favourite auntie. Lovely to visit, always happy to see her, but you probably wouldn’t want to move in permanently.

10 years on, Britain has been left poorer and worse off. The only winner? Nigel Farage and his friends. Time to go back into the single market and customs union and unleash the full potential of the United Kingdom 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿🇪🇺

10 years on from the Brexit referendum, the UK is poorer, weaker, and more isolated. We need to stop digging ourselves into a deeper hole and begin rebuilding our relationship with Europe by rejoining the Single Market.

Ten years ago today Britain voted by a narrow majority (51.9%) to leave the European Union. Most Brits living in other EU countries couldn’t vote. The Leave campaign featured a pack of lies and promises that did not materialise. Today, a growing majority want to the EU again

@joseph_ben_yah @mog_russEN It's not really changed much since the end of 2022, Russia peaked at 27%, Ukraine took back 8%. It's just been back and forth since then and remains around 19% now.

I know Keir as a decent honourable leader who has at all times been determined to put the needs of the country first. Today we think also of the huge support given by Vic and their family and wish them all well in the future.

Keir Starmer’s place in history is assured. We owe Keir a debt of gratitude for taking Labour from its worst electoral defeat in 2019, bringing Labour back into government with a huge majority in 2024 and then guiding Britain through difficult times nationally and globally.

The BBC says it wants to orientate its News Channel to international rather than British audiences because it can generate revenues internationally. Fair enough. But why should British licence payers pay for it?
