GENERAL YAKUBU GOWON AND POPE LEO XIV. Only a few days ago Yakubu Gowon wrote and published a Memoir of his life in which he detailed his roles in the Biafra war, excoriating everyone but himself in what many consider a revisionist attempt by a man who was front-and-center and instrumental in the creation of the war, and superintended its heinous outcome. Gowon exonerated himself in all the atrocities of that war, admitting little or no guilt or wrongdoing, and failing to apologize to what many consider to be the worse genocide committed by any group of people in the entire human race. A few days after Gowon’s indignant display, The Pope of the Catholics boldly issued an apology to the victims of slavery; crimes committed hundreds of years ago in which the Catholic Church was complicit and culpable. The Pope said sorry, but the all mighty Gowon has no contrition, no remorse and no shame for the dastardly acts he committed; that he planned, sanctioned and executed — the killing of millions of innocent people in Biafra. The essential thesis of this short note, is that the most brutal acts of Gowon have become a watershed of his life, and that instead of its history being a soothing balm in the domain of the past, softening our memories, it has become a dangerously loathsome reminder of his past and the fetid outcomes. Drawing a contrast between these two men and the institutions that they emerge from, I wonder how their dispersed actions might affect our consciousness … I wonder also if we could truly say without hesitation, that, “All is well with us, and that our children and their children’s children are well.” The cycle of the crimes of Biafra, just like those of slavery have left deep scars on the victors and the vanquished, more so on the victims, and robbing us all of our humanity. To remain truly human, no man can gain anything from the horrors, the pain and the suffering of those they oppress. And, what must be most painful is to not admit our failure and refuse to repent, confess and seek restoration and restitution. This is not a review of Gowon’s book - that job is in the domain of so many other writers and pundits. It is also not a rebuke of the man himself, because that judgement is reserved for God in whose domain Gowon will soon be. My advocacy is that we must TELL THE WORLD THE TRUTH always. Let us abhor the diminishment and condescension of telling not the Truth. Let us FEAR GOD. The trauma and the tragedy of Biafra when told properly, will help to lay the foundation needed to ensure the truth and the future of our country by guaranteeing the evolution of our society’s prosperity and stability. BBC wants to release a documentary titled “Surviving Biafra.” They want to paint Igbos as villains, but that narrative will never stand. The title should be “Surviving Nigeria.” You cannot call it “Surviving Biafra” Biafrans were victims of pogroms in Northern Nigeria, and victims of war criminals who starved 3 million Igbo children to death. BBC labeled the 1966 coup an “Igbo coup” and helped shape narratives that fueled hostility against Ndi Igbo. They also underreported the number of Igbo people massacred in the North. They are not the right people to tell Igbo stories. And of course, they chose a Yoruba filmmaker to make the documentary. Are we surprised? Whenever they want to push propaganda against Ndi Igbo, there is always an Onye Ofe Ose willing to help carry it out. Ndi Igbo, pay that documentary dust and let it flop.

This man resigned as the Minister of Power to contest for governorship primary election in Oyo State. He's a member of APC After the primary, his opponent got 576,000 votes to defeat him. He cried blue murder and went to check the register of members of APC in Oyo State, only to discover 157,000 was registered! He's been complaining that the party announced ESTIMATED VOTES to rob him the chances of becoming the candidate. Dear Minister of Power, thank God you even know the word ESTIMATED. When you were in charge of NEPA, you were milking us dry through estimated billing of electricity we never used. I am sure EFCC may be piling up estimated charges against you. I laugh an estimated laughter 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Former Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew once said that he learn't from the failure of Nigeria while building Singapore from a third world to a first world nation. Nigeria gained it's independence in 1960 while Singapore gained theirs in 1965. Our both countries where colonized by the British. He said that Nigeria lacked the will to be a nation. In his 1966 visit to Lagos, he observed that Nigeria's leaders were utilizing their positions for self-enrichment and private ventures rather than national advancement. For example, he recounted a conversation with Nigeria's Finance Minister at the time, who implemented protective import tariffs on shoes primarily so that he could retire and successfully run his own shoemaking factory. He learned from this that state resources were being heavily diverted to build personal wealth instead of establishing long-term, meritocratic, and productive institutions. He concluded that vast natural and human resources could not substitute for a cohesive national identity and honest, competent leadership. How i wish Nigeria can go back to basics and start fixing from there.

The Aburi Accord (January 4–5, 1967) was a critical but ultimately failed attempt by Nigeria’s Supreme Military Council (SMC) to resolve the deepening crisis after the 1966 coups and anti-Igbo pogroms. Hosted in Aburi, Ghana, by Ghana’s General Joseph Ankrah, it involved key military leaders, including Lt. Col. Yakubu Gowon (Head of the Federal Military Government) and Lt. Col. Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu (Military Governor of the Eastern Region).638877 Key Provisions of the Aburi Accord The agreements were documented in official minutes and a final communiqué. Here are the main points: 1. Renunciation of Force: All members solemnly declared they would not use force to settle the Nigerian crisis. They reaffirmed faith in discussions and negotiation as the only peaceful way forward. They agreed to exchange information on arms and ammunition stocks and halt further imports until normalcy returned. 2. Powers of the Supreme Military Council (SMC): Legislative and executive authority of the Federal Military Government would reside in the SMC. Decisions affecting the whole country required referral to the SMC, with military governors’ comments and concurrence where possible. This effectively introduced a principle of collective responsibility and unanimity on major issues, moving toward a more confederal structure.9c66bf Appointments and Senior Posts: Appointments to senior ranks in the police, diplomatic/consular services, superscale federal civil service posts, and equivalent statutory corporation roles needed SMC approval. 3. Repeal of Centralizing Decrees: Regional leaders (especially from the East) insisted that all decrees passed since January 15, 1966, which had reduced regional powers, should be repealed to restore mutual confidence.4ebe5c Military Reorganization: The Army would be governed by the SMC, chaired by a Commander-in-Chief (Head of the Federal Military Government). Establishment of a Military Headquarters with equal regional representation. 5. Creation of Area Commands corresponding to existing regions, under Area Commanders. During the military regime, Military Governors would control Area Commands for internal security. Other Issues: 6. Rehabilitation of refugees and displaced persons (hundreds of thousands of Easterners/Igbos who fled pogroms). Discussions on the future structure of the federation, with strong emphasis on greater regional autonomy. The accord leaned toward decentralization and regional autonomy while maintaining a nominal federal framework.

The Biafran War, also known as the Nigerian Civil War (6 July 1967 – 15 January 1970), was a secessionist conflict fought between the Nigerian federal government and the self-proclaimed Republic of Biafra in southeastern Nigeria. It resulted in Nigerian victory, the reintegration of the region, and an estimated 500,000 to 3 million deaths (mostly Biafran civilians from starvation and disease, with around 100,000 military casualties overall). Before the War: Roots in Colonialism, Independence, and Ethnic Tensions (Pre-1966 to May 1967) Nigeria gained independence from Britain in 1960 as a federation of three main regions (North, West, and East), each dominated by major ethnic groups: Hausa-Fulani in the North (largely Muslim), Yoruba in the West, and Igbo in the East (largely Christian). Deep regional, ethnic, and religious divisions existed, compounded by economic inequalities (the North was less developed educationally and economically) and competition for power and resources, including oil discoveries in the East.b3e2e2 January 1966: A group of mostly Igbo army officers staged a coup, overthrowing the civilian government. They killed Northern and Western leaders but spared some Eastern ones. Major General Johnson Aguiyi-Ironsi (an Igbo) took power. Many viewed this as an "Igbo coup," fueling resentment. July 1966: Northern officers launched a counter-coup. They killed Ironsi and installed Lt. Col. Yakubu Gowon (a Northern Christian) as head of state. Anti-Igbo pogroms erupted in the North, killing tens of thousands of Igbos and displacing around 1–2 million survivors to the East.127b75 Aburi Accord (January 1967): Gowon and Eastern military governor Lt. Col. Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu met in Ghana and agreed on a looser federation with more regional autonomy. Gowon later backed away, citing issues with implementation. May 1967: Gowon divided Nigeria into 12 states, splitting the Eastern Region (diluting Igbo influence and control over oil-rich areas). In response, on 30 May 1967, Ojukwu declared the Eastern Region independent as the Republic of Biafra, citing failure to protect Igbos and perceived marginalization. Nigeria viewed this as rebellion. Diplomatic efforts failed, and war became inevitable.

A teacher was beheaded and little children held captive with extreme torture. Is it not enough reason for the governor, all security chiefs and the president to resign? Their first duty is to protect them and they failed.
