Sitting down to work through and write about 2 Thess 2:1-17 and one of the first things I read is Augustine's summary of this passage: "I frankly confess that the meaning of this completely escapes me".

@turtology Oliver O'Donovan's On the Thirty-Nine Articles: A Conversation with Tudor Christianity (2nd ed. 2011 (first pub 1986)) may be worth a look though more essayistic than line by line commentary. O'Donovan is broadly evangelical.

@AJWTheology As a Christian humanities academic with amateur interests in theology, a lot of academic theology books read like unrevised PhD theses, whereas in history and literary studies PhD theses often undergo more thorough revision including for readability to turn into books.

When you read a lot of history and then go back to reading academic theology, it is hard not to notice how bad much of the writing is. Endless pages of throat-clearing, too many intramural cul-de-sacs, a preference for density over clarity, and a lack of editing. Many such cases!

Happy 250th birthday to Jane Austen: one of the greatest Christian intellectuals of all time!
I wrote about her faith a few years back. It was absolutely not just cultural. In fact, in the family devotional she wrote for her & her sister (with whom she lived throughout her life) she prayed specifically that they would not to be Christians "only in name."

Hmm. If that really was the content of the sermon, I’d be concerned that your preacher was telling you what you wanted to hear rather than challenging you with the gospel. Both the ‘woke liberati’ and the English nationalists need to know that they are sinners in need of grace…

@timfarron @Essex_otis Charitably you could take this opening as an attempt to win a hearing for the gospel but my concern would be that some listeners (and the media) would hear the 'Christmas is cancelled' bit and miss the grace bit.

@timfarron @Essex_otis Having watched out of curiosity, I would say that the majority was a mainstream 'gospel presentation' typical of evangelical carol services. However, it opened with a joke about Christmas being cancelled that would appeal to Reform rhetorical sensibilities.
