Here comes one of the largest coronal holes of Solar Cycle 25 so far! The time lapse spans the past 5 days of coronal hole(s) CH34+CH37 rotating into Earth-facing position. The CIR (Corotating Interaction Region) ahead of the fast solar wind stream is beginning to affect the Earth. The fast solar wind will be here in 1-2 days. SWPC has issued a G2 geomagnetic storm watch for Tuesday, April 22nd.

On April 21st, at 27.4 degrees from the Sun, Mercury reaches its maximum western elongation. Mercury will be at its maximum point above the horizon in the early sky at this hour, making it the ideal time to see it. Just before sunrise, look for the planet low in the eastern sky.

From April 9–12, Mars will align with the twin stars of Gemini (Castor and Pollux), creating a line that looks like Orion’s Belt. This rare event lets you see two “belts” in the night sky at once, an unusual and beautiful sight. Gemini’s Twins: Castor and Pollux are the brightest stars in Gemini and usually appear side by side. Mars passing between or near them in a straight line is uncommon. Orion’s Belt: Made of three bright stars (Alnitak, Alnilam, Mintaka), it's one of the most recognizable features in the sky. Viewing Tips: Look east shortly after sunset. Mars has a reddish hue, which makes it stand out. Binoculars help, but it’s visible with the naked eye.

🌓 5 April: First Quarter Moon at 2:16 UT (now). The days around First Quarter Moon are the best time to view craters and many other lunar features. Use binoculars or, better still, a telescope for some incredible views. 🔭 #Astronomy #Moon #Space

We are deeply saddened to hear this. Bruce was truly an amazing person. The astronomy community has definitely lost an icon. The stars have gained a new angel. RIP Bruce. 💔

This will be the hardest thing I've ever had to write. Last night, shortly after the hockey game and this tweet was written, my father .@BruceMcCurdy experienced a medical emergency and became unresponsive. My family called 911 and resuscitation efforts were performed to the maximum extent possible, and he was transported to hospital. Unfortunately despite the valiant efforts of St. Albert Fire & Rescue and the medical professionals at Sturgeon Hospital, my father passed away. To say that we are devastated is an extreme understatement and we ask for privacy as we deal with the grieving process. We understand that Bruce touch so many lives in various communities and we will do our best to advise what our next steps are. Thank you for your understanding on behalf of myself and the rest of the McCurdy family. I love you Dad, and I miss you more than words could ever tell you.
