Incredible vision by @hannu, who continues to write science fictions and create science realities. I find this future frightening, but it's coming, and it's good to know minds like his are working on the answers for human flourishing.

Today, we are launching Red Queen Bio (redqueen.bio), an AI biosecurity company, with a $15M seed led by @OpenAI. Biorisk grows exponentially with AI capabilities. Our mission is to scale biological defenses at the same rate. A 🧵 on who we are + what we do!👇🏻1/19

@FawazAM Let’s definitely discuss next time we hang out! :D (Speaking of which, are you going to the progress conference this year?)

While I appreciate many elements of IFS, meditation, breathwork, etc, a troubling throughline of all these tech-beloved therapies is that they tacitly reject the role of cognition, i.e. thinking and judgment, in causing emotion. This amounts to behaviorism in woo clothing.

@Gena_I_Gorlin Happy to know your thoughts here, but this also feels like a longer (and very interesting) conversation to have! Final reply, I promise :)

@Gena_I_Gorlin I've no doubt in the power of internalized thinking to shape emotions, and the importance of reason to guide our lives, but we are not all reason. To think all consciousness is a manifestation of reason I think diminishes both, the scope of consciousness and importance of reason.

@Gena_I_Gorlin What do you see as the elements of IFS worth appreciating? (From my context, this reads like saying: I see the value of going deep into the unconscious to see what's there, but not too deep...)

One confounding factor is that cognitive treatments tend to be more structured and proceduralized, which makes them easier for bad therapists to parrot without understanding. This earns them a reputation as shallow and lame, esp among contrarian, default-skeptical tech builders.

Tolkien, claiming stories are always about one thing - death: youtube.com/watch?v=tNZPwF… Of course, taken literally this is false. But it's uninteresting to consider first in what sense it's false; it's much more interesting to consider in what sense it's true. And it's perhaps pointing to stories having stakes, and a sense of obliteration - a death, small or large - if those stakes should be given up (I'm still trying to figure out what a story is. It's connected pretty deeply to what a theory or explanation or model is, too.)

@michael_nielsen We'll talk about it :) Incidentally, Julia and I are reading Les Misérables as a chapter a day, the framework by Lisa VanDamme. It's her first read through, and my first revisit in a long time. Very interested to talk through it!

This was a highlight of our festival journey. I lost count of the people who said our film moved them to tears. Plus a meaningful, insightful, challenging Q&A by Monica Lopez. Thank you Christopher Fabian and the team at @Gigaglobal for the invite and being such wonderful hosts!
Giga@Gigaglobal

Giga attended a screening of “Anwar” at the @AIforGood Global Summit, held alongside our Giga Connectivity Forum. Set in a future shaped by artificial intelligence, the film invites viewers to reflect on how emerging technologies may alter our relationships, identities, and the human pursuit of longevity. Explore some of the highlights from this thought-provoking sci-fi short. @FawazAM @chrisfabian #AIForGood #FilmScreening

@mbateman I think it's a great slogan if you want to move the Overton window towards a king. It's as old as Caesar.

“No kings” is an excellent slogan. Another data point in my view that slogans that catch on for the left are starkly bimodal, either wonderful or terrible (“defund the police”).
