Over the last decade since Crustacean Compassion was founded, we have worked tirelessly to protect crustaceans across all areas. During this time, we have seen incredible changes within government, the law, and the seafood and restaurant industries.  Now, as we enter 2026, there is the potential for significant welfare improvements for crabs, lobsters and prawns. These include a ban on live boiling and their inclusion in animal protection legislation. In December, the government recognised that boiling animals alive is “not an acceptable killing method” in its Animal Welfare Strategy, but this must now be translated into clear guidelines.  We won’t rest until these improvements are confirmed. That’s why we are writing to DEFRA, with the support of 17 other organisations, calling for urgent progress. 32 year-old bear, Teddy, has lived at Tierpark Westerhausen in Germany since she was born. Thanks to the new management at the park and the efforts of our EARS partner, Stiftung für Bären, Teddy can finally retire in a species-appropriate home at BEAR SANCTUARY Mueritz. 🌿

In the recently launched Animal Welfare Strategy, the Government has laid out its commitment to phasing out the use of cages in farming, banning trail hunting and snares and ending puppy smuggling and puppy farming. The UK must make strides in this area and I am pleased to see the progress the Government is making on animal rights. Thank you to FOUR PAWS UK and Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs for hosting this celebration and for their important work to deliver meaningful and much needed change for animals.
