Maltreatment of dead bodies is a LOAC (Law of Armed Conflict) violation under US law, as well as a war crime under the Geneva Conventions. In 2005, there was a high-profile US military investigation into the burning of dead combatants' bodies in Afghanistan.
Platner was in Iraq from 2004-2008, during which time he was a machine gun squad leader. He would have most certainly been briefed on body desecration, particularly of Muslim bodies, given religious law. The 2005 incident was an international scandal.
Platner gave his body-burning commentary to press in 2008, one year after he got his Nazi SS death-head tattoo.
