Ironically, the main countervailing force here would probably be Israel’s determination to stay the course. The double irony, however, is that Israel is intent on destroying the Iranian regime and its capabilities no matter how high the cost to the Gulf states in the process.

Consider this nightmare scenario: Trump keeps at it for few more weeks/months, fails to dislodge IRN regime and works out a deal instead: a partial restoration of shipping & side payments to IRGC. The global economy adjusts, but the Gulf states stay held to ransom by Iran.

Yet, the Gulf states cannot afford to live under constant Iranian blackmail where the IRGC decides who gets to transit the Strait of Hormuz or produce oil and gas. The Gulf states, like the rest of the world, have a vital interest in denying Iran this massive leverage.

I told @BeckyCNN that the US & Israel have shown ‘blatant disregard’ for the Gulf states’ security by starting this war and breaching red lines - the Qeshm desalination plant, Bushehr and South Pars - that generate predictable Iranian blowback against Gulf states’ interests.

This is highly significant but not entirely surprising. As I wrote in my latest piece, the Gulf states have a vital economic interest in resuming maritime transit through the Strait of Hormuz, and possess considerable military capacity to help do so.

@arieladmoni Not intent but interest. Intent will differ based on risk appetite, perception of Iran and the US, capability, etc. That said, I'd expect some other Gulf states to follow suit.

For the Gulf states, no choice with respect to Iran is risk-free: do nothing, and Iran has no incentive to stop; retaliate and you run the risk of inviting further Iranian escalation. My latest 👇🏽

Interesting that China and Russia abstained on, but chose not to veto, a Bahrain-led resolution at the UN Security Council that condemns and demands the 'immediate cessation' of attacks on the GCC & Jordan by Iran. Bahrain's draft apparently made no mention of the US or Israel.
