In 2021, the Scottish Government committed to recruiting 3,500 additional teachers. There has been no progress made on the recruitment of additional teachers, in fact, teacher numbers have fallen for three years in a row and by 600 last year in Primary schools, while the workload of those in the system remains unsustainable. There are 9 days left for COSLA and the Scottish Government to meaningfully and collegiately commit to addressing workload.

"We should be flooding Glasgow City Council schools with teachers and support staff, rather than looking to cut." @EISUnion have called Glasgow teachers' decision to vote in favour of strike action a "last resort", due to planned education cuts in the city.

Yesterday, @JennyGilruth said in parliament that supply was a choice for many teachers in Scotland. Today, we asked 787 supply teachers if this was true. 97% of them told us that they rather not be on supply.

It was only back in 2022 that the governments own modelling states the commitment made in Parliament to recruit an additional 3,500 teachers. Now we are simply ‘maintaining’.

The Scottish Government were elected in 2021 on a commitment to reduce class contact time to 21 hours. That commitment was made four years ago. There has still been no proposal for keeping this manifesto promise tabled at the SNCT. It is essential that any proposal on class contact time uses the full reduction to increase Preparation and Correction time. 1.5 hours of more preparation and correction time will mark a step forward in addressing the unsustainable workload of teachers. 1.5 hours of more preparation and correction time will allow teachers to better ensure quality learning for pupils, including those with ASN. There are 23 days left for COSLA and the Scottish Government to meaningfully and collegiately commit to addressing workload.

Pay an absolute fortune for @AvantiWestCoast trains for there to be no seats and passengers packed standing in the aisles. Here’s hoping I’m not standing from Crewe to Edinburgh.

🚨 Edinburgh Council is CUTTING vital support for vulnerable children! 🚨 My concern is that this reckless move has the potential to INCREASE the misuse of seclusion and restraint in schools. 😥 With fewer staff experienced in supporting children with additional needs, classrooms will become more challenging, and stretched staff may resort to these harmful practices to manage behavior. They meet on Nov 21st at 10am at City Chambers to discuss these devastating cuts. We need YOU! 👉 Show up at City Chambers: Make your voice heard! 👉 Sign the petition: you.38degrees.org.uk/petitions/stop… Our children deserve better! Let's show them we won't stand for this! @Edinburgh_CC @cllrcammyday @Joan_griffiths @JohnSwinney @djohnsonmsp @Miles4Lothian @ASNReformScot @EmpowerEDScot @AshReganALBA @ladymcbeth2 @MorrisonBeth @lezleymarion @lmacinnessnp @CoelhoMatt94065 #SaveOurSupport #ASN #Inclusion #EdinburghCouncil #NoMoreCuts #OurChildrenDeserveBetter #DisabilityRights #UNCRC #TraumaInformedSchools

The truth is that there is no money to employ them, and in order to save money class sizes are being maximised and staffing cut to the bone. The main driver is balancing budgets, rather than educating children. More ASN teachers are doubtlessly needed, but there won't be posts.
Emma Seith@Emma_Seith

New: Education secretary Jenny Gilruth has said she is looking for “innovative approaches” to the lack of stable employment for primary teachers - including encouraging them to gain an another qualification to become ASN specialists tes.com/magazine/news/…

@willie_rennie She highlights the huge amount of funding the government give to cover tuition fees and probation year… which is essentially being flushed down the toilet each year when these teachers are then not employed. How is that a good use of government funding?! Why let it continue?

At portfolio questions today I challenged the Education Secretary over level of unemployment, short term contracts and underemployment among teachers. This is because the government have failed to secure 3,500 extra teachers as they promised at the last election.

We are calling for tighter restrictions on fireworks following the death of Roxie, our endangered red panda kit, on bonfire night. Our expert vet team believe it's likely that three-month-old Roxie died due to stress caused by fireworks in the local area.

We're one of over 120 organisations from @EndChildPoverty who are calling for the two-child limit to benefit payments to be scrapped by @RachelReevesMP in the #Budget this week. Children cannot wait for change - every day that passes more children are pulled into poverty by this policy.
