From Schulman’s (an Americanist) “The Seventies.” The first time I’ve been exposed to the argument that the anti-Disco backlash was racially motivated. At the time I dismissed it, but the more I think about it, it seems…obviously true? Music is inherently racially coded. When I was growing up, it was simply…understood that rock was the White man’s music, and rap was technically Black music, but by then had accrued universal appeal, and rave-EDM stuff was Asian music. Things like Hoobastank and Sum 41 having one Asian member was seen as exceptional (and it was), and being a fan of rock music was enough to get you raised eyebrows in Indian/Asian circles.
