It is ironic that MAGA claims to oppose the “3rd-Worldization” of America, while engaging in the worst kinds of 3rd World behaviors (hating market-dominant minorities, engaging in blatant cronyism and corruption, attempting to overthrow the government, etc).

Regardless of how this specific race ends, it does feel like we are headed towards an inevitable future in which the US becomes an antisemitic country.

Gujarat is actually pretty similar to Iran on its primary education/literacy stats. Gujarat's overall literacy rate is 85% while Iran's 89%. Gujarat's youth literacy rate is 97.6% while Iran's is 99%. Iran's economy developed due to oil reserves but stagnated due to a combination of sanctions and lack of economic reforms. Without oil reserves, Iran would have been comparable to Egypt in terms of development.

Despite having 20 million more people and some of the largest oil reserves on the planet, Iran is insanely unproductive, and are brutally economymogged by Gujjus. Remember, online larping is not real life. Left is Iran, Right Gujarat

I spent Coronavirus as a physician in deep Red towns. I never once heard this argument given as a reason to avoid vaccines or public health measures or whatever. People who are not around the “liberal elites” tend not to obsessively follow what the liberal elites have to say! It’s basically just conservative people in deep Blue cities or professions who raged about this hypocrisy. But that has more to do with them being predisposed to hating the libs from the start.
Tim Carney@TPCarney

Another clarifying moment for me was this: The very same journalists who six weeks earlier said that protesting during a pandemic was *UNTHINKABLE* were declaring protest during a pandemic PATRIOTIC.

I’m pro-abortion as they come, except when a child will have to live with a congenital disability and you have to raise it. (No, I won’t be raising it, this is purely theoretical for me)

Virtually every upper-middle class person aborts in the case of Trisomy 21. The people who don’t tend to have “low health literacy” (in the technical sense of the term.) The pro-life vehemence that we cannot abort in the case of Trisomy 21 is an unforced error, and another reason why being a staid, professional-class suburban couple is now lib-coded.

I know that you're never going to persuade pro-lifers on the Down Syndrome thing. I understand where they are coming from. But they need to appreciate the reality that very few people agree with them and/or are willing to do that.

@JacksonAlbion I guess, but it’s no funnier than Cricket and PG Wodehouse being associated with India, or Sumo Wrestling being associated with Japan (when historians believe it may have been a Tang Dynasty custom.)

@MT_6226 It's funny that EDM and rave music is (to this day) associated with Asians, considering every influential and notable musician in the genre is Black and/or White.

From Schulman’s (an Americanist) “The Seventies.” The first time I’ve been exposed to the argument that the anti-Disco backlash was racially motivated. At the time I dismissed it, but the more I think about it, it seems…obviously true? Music is inherently racially coded. When I was growing up, it was simply…understood that rock was the White man’s music, and rap was technically Black music, but by then had accrued universal appeal, and rave-EDM stuff was Asian music. Things like Hoobastank and Sum 41 having one Asian member was seen as exceptional (and it was), and being a fan of rock music was enough to get you raised eyebrows in Indian/Asian circles.

Every country in the world including Iran and North Korea now has app based ride share services like Uber. This can provide economists a wealth of comparable datasets on earnings between countries for similar skill sets. For instance, a ride share driver in Mumbai earns roughly $277-$833 per month. A comparable driver in Tehran earns $500 to $1420 per month (this figure is likely lower now due to currency crash)

Gujarat, with less people and zero oil reserves now has a higher nominal GDP than Iran. Even with USD to INR at 96, Gujarat’s GDP is $346 billion. Iran’s oil industry is heavily controlled by the government. It’s insanely inefficient. Sanctions aren’t a sufficient explanation for low productivity. “If you put the federal government in charge of the Sahara Desert, in 5 years…” - Milton Friedman

The pro-life cause in general is an “unusual religious belief”! It does not exist outside Catholicism and certain strains of 20th century Protestantism. Most parts of the world have a consensus that abortion is fine. That does not make the pro-life view wrong, but it does make it the rough equivalent of Hindu views on beef-eating (which exist in much of India, and at a lower level in Sri Lanka and Burma). The thing to do in that situation is devolve policy to the provincial level, with the understanding that pro-life and anti-beef views are regional cultural customs, not laws of nature.

“Due to Trisomy 21” He wants you to mishear that as Trisomy 13, or otherwise assume this was some rare terminal illness Down syndrome. He’s talking about Down syndrome.
Jesse Ridgway@McJuggerNuggets

This week, my wife and I made the very difficult decision to terminate the pregnancy due to Trisomy 21. The choice was not made lightly. We really appreciate all of the personal stories that you guys shared with us, especially the unconditional support we received from fans with no matter what we decided. I know some of you may be very disappointed to hear this news. We are devastated. This has been extremely traumatic for both of us, especially Ashley. She underwent the procedure earlier this week and is on the mend. Thankfully, everything went smoothly, but emotionally we are drained. Trisomy 21, also known as Down Syndrome, is caused by an extra chromosome. It is caused by an error in cell division, like a glitch. The odds of a baby having it is 1 in 1000. When I first confronted this news, I was shocked but optimistic. If they’re a little slow intellectually, then we’ll make it work. I signed on to be a parent, come what may…but I just didn’t fully understand what Down Syndrome entailed. Once we made it public, it became clear that MOST people don’t know what Down Syndrome entails (and no, it’s not the same as Autism): 50% of babies with DS have heart defects. 75% will have hearing challenges. Over 50% will have vision problems. Impaired immune function, developmental disabilities, learning disabilities, delayed physical development, poor muscle tone, structural issues with face, decreased lifespan, etc…Sadly, the list is long, feel free to look it up…Down Syndome isn’t a “blessing”, it is objectively shitty from a health perspective. I didn’t realize just how rough it is for the child, let alone the family…more often than not, they would be fully dependent on others for the rest of their life. The miscarriage risk is also close to 50%, which made matters worse…they may never see the light of day and it puts Ashley further at risk. We spoke with doctors, friends, family and genetic counselors and learned that up to 90% of women terminate their pregnancy after learning the baby has Trisomy 21. This was WAY higher than I expected, I thought it would be lower given that I hear so many say they kept or would keep the baby. I believe that’s because most terminations happen privately, it feels shameful. A lot of judgment being cast. You never think you’d be in this type of situation until it happens to you and then things change. To all of my fans who have weighed in on this topic who have Autism, Down Syndrome or any other conditions…we appreciate you. You matter a lot and we’re glad you’re here. I commend you and your families for having the strength and courage to push forward. As for us, we made a difficult decision that we believe in the long-run will be beneficial for our family. Thankfully, we had a choice. It will take a little time to move on, but we are excited to try again in the future and hopefully have a better outcome. Love you guys & thank you for understanding. ❤️

I’m pro-choice, but to be fair, slavery was literally “people owning people,” and many northerners, even pro-abolitionists, did the equivalent of “post.”

Exactly! You can't do pro-natalism without abortion. You won't convince educated PMC women to have kids if you make every pregnancy into a roll of the dice. "If you can't handle a disabled child, then don't have children at all." "Ok, then I won't." "No, not like that!"
Dilan Esper@dilanesper

The thing is this sort of anti-natalism is the logical conclusion of pro-lifers' views about terminations in cases of severe fetal health conditions. If you believe every pregnancy has to be a lottery ticket with a significant chance of this outcome, you WILL deter procreation.

Forcing people to carry babies with genetic abnormalities to term, and then to care for them with little assistance for the rest of their lives, will only discourage people from having kids. This guy made the right choice for his family, and that choice will lead to other kids.

The Western US is highly urbanized, sparsely populated, and vast. It's not wholly wrong to think of it as an archipelago of cities connected by thin strips of asphalt. Many who've never been don't understand this. It's nothing like the East, with its many, many towns.

It is a lonely job being the USA ambassador to Denmark these days. Previous USA ambassadors were treated like rock stars and were very popular in Denmark which has always been a very pro-American country. But that is over now. The current ambassador, Ken Howery, @USAmbDenmark was sent to Denmark last year accompanied by a message from Trump that his job is to secure U.S. control over Greenland. He keeps posting BS on social media about how he wants to deepen ties between Denmark and the USA. But you have to choose. You can't both try to take Greenland and have good relations with Denmark. As a result, he is treated like the enemy that he is, and nobody wants to socialize with him. A Danish newspaper recently spotted him going undercover as a Danish football fan at a carnival. He has to dress up and hide like this to be able to go out and be among the Danes.

The conservative claim that the Heartland has undiscovered founts of talent is roughly analogous to the liberal claim that enlightened bureaucrats with enough tax money can solve all our social problems, or the libertarian claim that private charity can replace social services. They are all statements of ideology rather than empirically grounded.
