In 1965, First Lady Lady Bird Johnson accepted a gift of an additional 3,800 cherry blossom trees from Japan. She joined Mrs. Ryuji Takeuchi, wife of Japan's Ambassador to the US, to reenact the planting ceremony for the original 1912 gift of trees.🌸 @LBJLibrary

In return for the 1912 gift of trees, this high school in Tokyo received a dogwood tree, called 花水木 (はなみずき - hanamizuki) in Japanese, from the US in 1915! Today, it stands as the cherished symbol of their school. Whether in Japan or in the US, together we bloom! 🌸

Today marks the 15th anniv of the Tohoku earthquake and tsunami. I commend the bravery shown that day by first responders, including U.S. military personal, during Operation TODOMACHI. This reminds us that the U.S.-Japan relationship remains strong and shows what we can achieve together.
